I agree with your statement, however a loss to a team the status of FSU is not a typical MAC loss.
On average throughout the year, if a SEC team lost, they dropped no more than 5 spots. Georgia losing 35-7 to South Carolina is the only bigger drop at 7 places.
If an ACC team lost, it dropped at least 7 spots.
If a Big12, Big10, Pac12 team lost, it could be 7 to 11 spots.
Once the BCS polls started, you had stranger things with the computer rankings. FSU finished the season 12th in the BCS, but looking at the polls that count towards the BCS: 12th in the Harris, 12th in the USA/Coaches, 14-24 in the computer polls.
NIU was 15th BCS, 16 Harris, 16 USA/Coaches, 12-NR computer.
All of the SEC teams ranked had the computer polls even with their coaches and harris poll rank.
Look at the Sagarin rankings for example, he has the BCS one which only counts wins/losses and the other which also counts margin of victory and the quality of the win.
He has NIU ranked 29th for BCS purposes btw before the Orange Bowl.
I think NIU should still be ranked around 20-22, but the computers will drop them from the BCS ranks. Look at the Harris, Coaches and AP polls instead.
