With SDST being #12 & staying at 12
the best splitt you come up with is 7-5, forcing 1 school over is why WAC 16 split.
to get Hous, youre gonna need a block of 4 schools [maybe 3]
16 works with SDST, Hous, SMU, UTEP, Memphis

Until the SWC split, SMU refused to recognize Tech and UH as real SWC schools (at least their alums did) because they joined in the 50's and 70's instead of the 10-20's.

The more I think about it the more I'm certain that SMU wants to stay in the nBE and UH wants to leave. Rice and Tulsa would be welcomed in and UTEP/NMSU and UH would go to the MWC and best of all it puts all the SWC schools (ok so it was only Rice) in the best situation outside of the Big 5.

I've been thinking that MWC might eventually add UTSA/UTEP (if no UH) but figured it wouldn't be anytime soon. Wait until they see what the next TV contract pays and then float that idea to the networks. Those school aren't the slam dunk that UH is nor have the history of $MU but still large/largish markets with no direct fb school in the immediate area (yeah UT still owns SA but still).

MWC will stay at 12, and work on BYU while keeping tabs on UTEP (and NMSU to a lesser extent) and if they pass the UTEP/UTSA combo may make them some money when the time comes. San Antonio feels more like a Western city than most of the cities in the Texas Triangle (DFW>I-45>Houston>I-10>Austin/SanAntonio>I-35>DFW) and the pairing of UT system schools make it look like it was meant to be (sorry UTA/UTPA). Hell, Rice and UNT may want to come to depending on how CUSA 3.0 is working out.

Don't think NMSU is anywhere on the MWC radar

They aren't. Tk posted about them. They can only hope for SBC to take them, after MWC, BE, CUSA dominoes fall.

7-5? think again

WEST
SJSU
SDSU
Fresno
Nevada
UNLV
Hawaii

EAST
BSU
USU
CSU
AFA
Wyoming
UNM

MWC 14(BSU would want this so they're in the west w/ CA schools)
WEST
BSU
SJSU
SDSU
Fresno
UNLV
Nevada
Hawaii

EAST
UTEP
UTSA
UNM
CSU
AFA
Wyoming
USU

At 16 USU would go west and Houston & SMU to east.

I think the ways the divisions are split is of HUGE importance after the whole WAC Airport-5 "pod" fiasco. They won't repeat that mistake. So, strangely, the larger the divisions, the easier it is to accommodate the groups that need to play one another each year. If they do decide to have a championship game, I suspect they would prefer 16 to 12. Also, if BYU joins, they need to avoid whining over who gets to play BYU the most. That whining was a big reason behind implementing the pod system.

So no further comments here after todays information?

Lot of smoke today that #1 and #2 are a done deal.

Going back to the OP information, the question is do they have the other teams locked up?

My personal feeling is UTEP is good to go if asked. So along those lines, I would look for them to be announced right after the other 2. If they aren't announced at that time, that would be a bad sign for UTEP IMHO as it would mean the MWC is waiting on Houston/SMU/Tulsa to make a final decision as there is potential they are left out if those 3 choose MWC over nBE.

Thoughts?

I'll believe BYU when I see them on the schedule w/ 8 conf games. SDSU for 12 is a sure thing. I hope we get into Texas but if we do it will likely be w/ UTEP and UTSA.

nBE will add Tulsa and wait to see if Navy is still coming and go w/ a 12/11. If Navy bails then I think S.Miss gets 12.

SDSU is most likely back. If they can get BYU in it would be a coup. Finding a 14th school to come in in 2014 might be tricky, but UTEP would be willing and able.

I think this setup would be liked by all parties involved. Boise and Hawaii get to play the California schools and most of the Mountain/Front Range schools stick together.

West:

Boise St
Fresno
SDSU
SJSU
Nevada
UNLV
Hawaii

East:
BYU
Utah State
Wyoming
Colorado State
New Mexico
Air Force
UTEP

I think BYU would be okay in the east. More of their historical rivalries are there, and it gives them an easier road to the CCG if BSU sustains its high level of competitiveness.

BYU would insist on playing Air Force every year and yea the old guard they started the WAC with is in the East. They would want a game in Cali or Vegas every year though to be sure.

Boise and Byu would want to be on opposite sides in the dream they both can dominate their half of the league when in reality Boise has not won a solo MWC FB championship since they joined

If BYU did ever come back, they would insist on being in the western division. California is BYU's lifeblood.

I don't think your Prez and AD want to go west though. I also think Tulsa wants to rejoin SMU and Tulane in the nBE. I also think BYU stays Indy so our realistic choices are SDSU(highly likely) UTEP(will join if SDSU stays out), UTSA(would be #14 if the MWC deemed going to 14 w/ SDSU, UTEP, UTSA is worth it. All others are probably low on the MWC to do list.

Boise fans would not know much about UTEP, and that's understandable since we haven't been in the same conf. But UNM, BYU, AFA, Co State, and others, would be able to tell you that the history with UTEP runs deep. We shared rivalry games that were as intense as any other conference's.

At any rate. Here is some info for those who wonder what UTEP could bring.
- Even a poor performing team will average close to 30k in attendance.
- A winning team will average attendance in the 40-42K.
- Facilities are great. How many teams have a stadium that seats over 52K
- El Paso has a population of about 820K (closing on a million), but the market as a whole follows UTEP, and not any other TX school
- UNM, AFA, Co St, are in fairly close proximity
- UTEP could bridge geographically to SMU/Houston (if they are in too)
- UTEP bball just recruited the 16th ranked class
- Bball can easily average 9-11K in attendance

As SDSU and BYU are in talks, it seems that UTEP's chances of going home are shrinking. Many MWC fans also say it's time to bring UTEP home.
