As if Northern Illinois didn't need any added motivation for its match-up against Florida State Tuesday night in Miami, the Huskies got a little more. And it comes from an unlikely place: a rant from an Orange Bowl representative towards an NIU staffer.

“You guys [NIU] don't even deserve to be here,” the Orange Bowl rep said to the NIU staffer. “We didn't even want you here.”

Unfortunately bowl games are a business and the add of NIU is most likely a multimillion dollar loss for the bowl itself. The representative was probably pretty damn truthful.

I hate to be blunt, but from a business standpoint no one wants NIU. They don't have the marketability of Boise (or the ESPN push) or the traveling fanabse.

If it is a joke that #15 Northern Illinois is in, than it is a joke that #21 Louisville is in.

No, I think Herbstreit and ESPN are the joke.

I'm pulling for NIU, but it's the truth. They didn't deserve to be there even if they go HAM and upset FSU. That's the facts, and the Orange Bowl is trying to make money. You think NIU is going to bring as many fans as Georgia or someone else like that, or that FSU fans will show like they would have for that game. It was unprofessional but nothing that guy said wasn't true or probably deserved. Who knows what the NIU staffer said to him to provoke that comment either.

LOL, deserves have never had anything to do with it.

NIU being there is costing the Orange Bowl reps money, hence the anger.

If the Orange Bowl execs really want to cash in, they would pump this story out as much as possible, no such thing as bad pub.

actually the offical was extremely unprofessional and should be demoted or fired. The fact is you have a team ranked 15th playing and regardless of if you feel they deserve it or not, they are ranked there. As for business, in a business you have to take risk and that is very true in the bowls, so if they got there then you treat them like you would any other team, and act in a professional manner. There is no excuse for this behavior and that is all there is to it in my opinion.

Business deals sometimes go bad. That's never a good excuse for being a total *******, especially to a team and school that played by the rules and earned their way.

anyway.....let's remember these BCS Bowls are guaranteed to bring in money because the participating schools are contracted to buy 17,500 full priced tickets from the bowls. Regardless of the teams involved. That puts the ticket risk on the schools, not the bowls. Corporate sponsorships and other packages outside of the schools are probably long sold in advance with these events as well.

So the place it may hurt the Orange Bowl when it comes to NIU is with actual butts in the seats at the stadium and out of town visitors visiting area establishments. Maybe it hurts with a TV viewing audience. We'll find out when final ratings come out. But the money from the ESPN contract is guaranteed as well. It's booked. Signed. Done. Doesn't matter how many people watch tonight.

oh yeah...and I think, according to the Death of the BCS book, the participating schools are on the hook for a certain amount of full priced hotel rooms for a contract length of time too. So it's not like the partnered hotels can be mad at the Orange Bowl for picking NIU. $$$$$$$$$ is coming to them as well! no problem!

You can be as blunt as you want but the OB rep showed zero class. Bowl reps are leaches anyway but they should know enough to keep things civil.

orange bowl should thank their lucky stars they are still a BCS bowl
