Exclamation NCAA Prez Mark Emmert hopes to unveil new stipend plan in April
http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...n-in-april

...Emmert told CBS Sports he hopes to unveil a retooled stipend plan likely to include a “need-based component” to his board of directors in April.

Among the plan's options, according to Emmert:

Athletes applying for money through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
Giving universities or conferences discretion over how funds are allocated.
Calculating stipend payments based on family contributions.

Creating more separation between haves and have-nots. Wanna bet that at some point the estimated $300K per team APR money from new contract gets mentioned during the process?

Trying to keep the big teams from splitting away. Doubt it will work long term.

Paying players helps the big teams pull away in the short term, until they're ready to split off altogether in the long term. It's a win-win for them.

Dumb. And I hate the argument that a sport is like a full-time job in college. Well, guess what, they are getting 'paid' to play a sport in college in the form of a scholarship that can be worth $10,000, $20,000, $30,000+ per year! You get your schooling paid for, your housing paid for, your food paid for, free books for class, don't need to pay any fees. Then they complain about, "Well, how am I supposed to go to the movies, or go to the store, etc." How many other college students have to take out LOANS just to pay for their education, then they have to worry about housing and food?!? Why don't student-athletes do what practically all other college students do and GET A STUDENT LOAN?!? Student-athletes cry about having to spend a few bucks of their own, maybe they shouldn't be worrying about getting tattoos, nice cars, going out to the club and drinking or smoking weed.

In the long run should not be a problem for UAB - we will just increase the deficit from 16 million to say 20 million just like we always have 05-stirthepot

...One problem w/ need-based stipend plan is that once student-athletes turn 18, all technically can be independent adults w/ no income. #NCAA
...Thus, all student-athletes can claim no income. Should it matter what one's parents make? How can you prove if one has been cut off? #NCAA

We know none of the details but appears to be based on FASLIC. As long as you are an undergraduate, You are basically presummed to receive whatever help from what the parents can afford. There are a few exceptions such as marriage or military service but turning 18 (or even 21) is not one. On the academic side, I have seen kids screwed.

Just a guess but I assume the new aide will go primarily to kids who already get pell grants.
