RE: Thinking through realignment
The Big 5 (or 4) are pretty much getting everything they could ever want financially and exposure wise. Going to take something drastic to hurt their tyrannical hold on college football.

It's sad and my strong interest in college football is waning.
It's not even about dollars any more. It is about fleeting perception.
I think back on when NMSU left for the WAC. Since 1962 it had been their goal and when they got there, 15 of the schools they looked at and said "I'd like to be in a conference with them" were gone. Four of the schools they joined with weren't even Division I when they got abandoned from the Border Conference for the formation of the WAC.
They latched on to the perception of a dying WAC and now their survival basically hinges on the Sun Belt being worried enough about the future to let them return.
In a better world UConn and Cincinnati and Houston and SMU would thank each other for their time and effort and go their own ways starting new leagues but that means having to think long-term rather than day dreaming about being the next Big XII, ACC team.
Even if that didn't happen, maybe common sense will prevail and ODU, Charlotte, Marshall, FAU, FIU, UAB, MTSU will sit down and say "we've got to make some sense of this, it's time forge a new identity and find three to five schools who make sense for our region, add them and build a conference that makes sense."
But that isn't likely either.

About the only thing that could do it would be for College Football to have a major drop in popularity.
And actually....the Big 4 seem to be trying real hard to have that happen.

They are a household name like Bammer or Ohio State. Their fans told us so. And they own the Nashville market. You better lock down Atlanta's borders.....you're next!!!!

Bears repeating.
At PEAK VIEWERSHIP, 79% of televisions that can receive ESPN were NOT tuned in to the BCS title game.

It still drew a 15 rating with 26.4 million viewers. That is down, but not many were expecting ND to compete against Alabama. Maybe ratings will go back up again when its a non-SEC contender on both sides of the field...but right now, their dominance is still drawing millions of viewers.

I understand the concern of the transition and the whipping that the FCS move ups generally take. But, you take on teams like App State, GA Southern, Jax State, Lamar, and ....this is hard for me to even suggest... Liberty, you will have teams that will be loyal, faithful, and not looking at the SBC as an entrance only door, with plans to jump as soon as possible, to CUSA or anywhere else. Let the doubters go as they may, bring on the ones that truly WANT to be in the SBC, and in 5 or 6 years - the SBC is truly a BCS buster - in the fact we would have a chance to break into the upcoming FBS playoff system - or at the very least, upset the Alabama's , Georgia's, and other big name FBS schools of the world
MT, FIU, FAU, and WKU were startup FBS programs when they joined the Sun Belt. They truly wanted to be in the SBC. Three of the four are already gone. USA and Georgia State are new startups.
The charter SBC football members are faced with rebuilding the conference after all the years it took to grow to this point. That's disheartening to have to rebuild the year after it looked like you finally surpassed CUSA.
The MT and FAU defections were my wake up call. If they stayed, I thought the SBC would gel and maybe lure a CUSA school or two into the fold. Now I know better.
Unless all Sun Belt presidents commit immediately to $25 million athletic budgets, this is the way things are going to be. Economics generally ranks your conference status.

Four million of those live in Alabama. I bet seven out of every ten televisions in the state had that game on. I didn't give two ***** about it and I had it on; for about a quarter.

ASU, ULL, ULM, and Troy will be left to pick up the pieces. Of the 4, ASU and ULL have basically been in this thing together since the beginning. We'll be fine, because there are some good additions out there, and we'll still end up with a strong league. Thing is, it may not be pretty for a couple years, meaning our top teams are going to have to continue to win OOC games to keep our ranking near the top of the Non AQ's. Something tells me we wont be able to rely on Georgia State to be a quality opponent for a couple years.
