WKU pre-game thread
They can't shoot the 3 worth beans (29.5% on the year), but they do defend it very well (31.5%), so the differential is not that great.

They dominate the boards (plus 6), but it is a team effort, because their leader averages only 6 and change. Teeng Akol has 21 blocks.

They have three guys averaging at least 12 ppg, but then it drops off to 7, so they have designated scorers. Those three have taken about half the shots for the team, and those three shoot well, so there is good reason for it. Those three and one other play at least 28.9 minutes/game, so their good guys are going to be on the floor a lot.

They are 10-5, 4-0 in conference. Looks like the old Topper teams, except for their shooting percentages. Evidently the wrong guys are taking too many shots from the arc. We need to keep them taking them. T. J. Price is really their only consistent 3-point threat.

At the beginning of the year we were in an across the board slump. Three of our main shooters: Caden Dickerson, Kevin Kaspar, and Brandon Harris started the season a combined 16 for 86 from three (18.60%). That's through the Southern Illinios game.

Now Caden Dickerson got injured before he could pull out of his slump. But since the So. Ill game Kaspar and Harris have gone a combined 36 for 99 or a respectable 36%. Keep in mind that three of those games since So Ill were Louisville, VCU, and Murray State. Three pretty good defenses.

Like I said, we started the game against North Texas hitting 5 out of 6 threes. We seem to be gaining confidence and trending upward on the three point shooting.

If you are making your 3's, it may be a long night for us.

Yep. Threes can be a streaky thing and can change a game in a hurry.

I love the three point shot. It negates size advantage to some extent. A smaller team with great three point shooting has a chance against a team who can dominate inside. Of course if you have a team who can dominate inside, who also has great three point shooting, then you have a Final Four team in most cases.

I don't particulary like the three point shot because it has hurt overall shooting. Most everyone, including many of the bigs, like to shoot the three, so that's what they tend to shoot in practice, instead of working on shorter shots. Yes, the three is exciting, but I'd like to see them do away with it. Just my opinion though.

I grant Doc's point that the 3 has helped equal the field for the little guys, since 3-point shooters are pretty easy to come by, but I agree with you that it has hurt the game greatly. The college game, particularly, has become almost completely one-dimensional.

Yep, those that have the big men to do it, but I think it would be accurate to say that the main thrust of the vast majority of offensive schemes these days, whether inside-out or just out, is getting open looks at 3's. It only stands to reason. It is fairly easy to get an uncontested 3 attempt, and the reward for taking it is a lot higher, especially since you punish the defender with 3 foul shots if he touches you. Only makes sense. And 3-point shooters are a whole lot easier to find than good big men.

No mention of us on their board. Sounds like we are a lot more worried about them than they are about us. And probably rightly so.

When you see a Syracuse who have guys who can play tremendous zone defense, run the court, make dunks, and hit the three, that's the teams who win most games. Well rounded. And the threes are exciting to watch.

Looks like last game they started Teeng, Fant and Price across the front: 6-11, 6-6, 6-4. It would be tempting to start our big line-up against them, but I am afraid they would run us out of the gym if they did that.
