Parker contributes game-high 21 to help UC stay unbeaten

JaQuon Parker matched his season high with 21 points - 16 in the second half - and the University of Cincinnati Bearcats rallied from an 8-point deficit to defeat Wright State, 68-58, Saturday before 9,248 fans at Fifth Third Arena.

The 11th-ranked Bearcats (12-0) overcame another poor offensive first half, scoring only 22 points for the second straight game, and became the eighth team in school history to start a season with 12 straight wins. UC outscored Wright State, 46-30, in the second half, held the Raiders to 32.2 percent shooting for the game, and blocked 10 shots. Titus Rubles scored 11 points with nine rebounds for UC.

The victory was the 125th for Mick Cronin as UC’s head coach, tying him with Tay Baker for fourth place among all UC coaches. He is 125-88 as the Bearcats’ head coach.

The Raiders (8-4) saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.

Leading by six at halftime, Wright State scored the first two points of the second half to take a 30-22 lead, its largest of the game. Parker then scored 10 straight points for UC to put the Bearcats ahead, 32-30, their first lead since the 7:12 mark of the first half.

With Parker leading the way, the Bearcats outscored the Raiders, 23-6, in the first seven-plus minutes of the second half to take a 45-34 lead with 12:52 remaining on a one-handed slam dunk follow shot by Titus Rubles. Parker scored 15 of those points for UC.

Wright State, which has never beaten UC in nine tries, didn’t get closer than seven points the rest of the way. The Raiders were led by Jerran Young, who scored 14 points.

UC shot just 24.3 percent from the field in the first half and made only 2 of 11 shots from 3-point range. Wright State wasn’t much better, shooting 25.8 percent but made eight of 12 from the free throw line compared with two of six for UC.

The Raiders did a good job of taking care of the ball against UC’s pressure defense, committing only four turnovers in the first half. They didn’t commit their first turnover until the 8:04 mark.

UC’s biggest lead in the first half was three points. The score was tied at 20-20 after a Rubles follow shot with 5:08 left, but the Bearcats managed only two points the rest of the half, getting outscored, 8-2, during the final five minutes.

Wright scored only two points for UC in the first half and missed all six of his field goal attempts. Kilpatrick, coming off a 25-point performance vs. Xavier, was one for five from long range. UC center Cheikh Mbodj played only three minutes in the first half after picking up two quick fouls.

I immediately thought the same thing. A game near Christmas, no students and not a name opponent and over 9,000 people show up? Great!

crowd was better than i figured it would be....all things considered.

I have seen several collage hoops games this year and a lot of them have had very poor attendance....and I'm talking bcs schools here.

If we continue to play local teams like Wright State, Miami, Dayton, and Ohio. That helps attendance and the RPI. Bearcats are good enough to play this schedule.

nothing bill does will ever please y'all, so why even post? now i've never had this conversation with the average reader of bill's, but i'd be willing to bet that a summary of the game would suffice for them. you're right though. one could almost have written that by looking at the box score. it's worth your time to post repeatedly that he's terrible. i guess i'm doing the same thing though

It's almost a running joke to me that someone will rip Bill when he writes a piece. I don't disagree but I get a good chuckle when I see Ctip post a Koch article because I know one of the first posts will be ripping Bill.

Just trying to keep the chuckleheads happy..

In the past, and perhaps now,,that article would be ALL we would get
about the UC VS WSU. No analysis. Sufficient? No way

I think Beta means Koch is a POS. Therefore anything he writes must by default be a POS article.
