I agree, we aren't just potential conference mates in the Big West, many are our system mates and schools like Cal Poly SLO, UCSB, UCI, UCD, UCR are schools we are most alike in the state. SDSU can in no way be seen as willfully causing any damage to the big west, and I'm sure if our hand is forced, we will do whatever is necessary to make right shall we have to leave.

You are right however that if Fresno and SDSU want to ever actually offer doctoral degrees that actually say SDSU and not UCSD then pissing off the UC's won't help in the state legislature.

The only Cal State we are similar to is Cal Poly SLO, we do more research than UCR

State already offers some PhDs on a stand alone basis.

SDSU wants to be a national university. They don't want to be a regional school, stuck in the obscurity of the MWC.

San Diego State doesn't get many people to the football games because the games are being played off campus. They need an on campus football stadium. Minnesota and Tulane got out of their on campus stadiums and got burned for it. Tulane is moving back to campus in 2014. San Diego State needs to the same or they wind up like Long Beach State with no football team.
