12 year old girl in wheelchair tries to blow up plane
Thank goodness the TSA snuffed her out.
Quote:A Texas mom was dumbfounded and angry when her preteen, wheelchair-bound daughter was left sobbing at the security gate at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport when reps from the Transportation Security Administration detected traces of explosive on her hand.
Shelbi Walser, 12, has brittle bone disease, and was flying to Tampa, Fla., to receive treatment on Sunday when she was randomly selected for an explosives screening on her way through security. Tammy Daniels, Walser's mother, said that her daughter tested positive for explosives when a screener swabbed Walser's palms and fingers.
Daniels was separated from her daughter for an hour while the situation was sorted out. All she was able to do was film the incident and her embarrassed daughter crying.
"It's O.K., you didn't do anything wrong, we're going to get you on your way," an official can be heard saying to the girl on the video.
Speaking with ABC affiliate WFAA, Walser said that she has no idea how the traces of explosive got on her.
"It could have come off fertilizer, because we have chickens. I could have run through something from them," she said. "It could have just come off the ground, because I roll through everything."

RE: 12 year old girl in wheelchair tries to blow up plane
Quote:Despite the delay, the mother and daughter made their flight to Tampa. Daniels, however, feels that the screening that was so grueling for her girl was too much.
"I am by no means undermining our safety in the air. After 9/11, by no means am I doing that," Daniels told WFAA. "But when it comes to children, common sense is not in a textbook."
A sad situation, for sure.
But in small defense of the TSA on duty... if they believe they found explosive residue on her person, they have to check it out. My hope here is that they didn't humiliate her or make it 'grueling,' but you can't just "let it go by" because it's a girl in a wheelchair.
Maybe it's because I've just read about the CT elementary school shooting, but it wouldn't be completely impossible that a woman would be so twisted/out of her mind that she'd plant something on her daughter. It obviously wasn't the case here, but I've seen enough whack-jobs going off lately...

There is nothing off-limits in the terrorism playbook. Children, old people, women, the disabled. The problem is you need to come up with a procedure that preserves the integrity of an inspection with the dignity of the person. The TSA has clearly not done either.

That's absolute bull****. Well over one million people board a domestic flight every ******* day. And you hear of maybe one of these types of things a week...and that's being extremely generous.

Flying from Houston back home I always try to bring a Turducken or something from Hebert's Smokehouse back. Last time I had a cooler inside a cardboard box with 2 turduckens and some brisket from Goode Company. Well when the cardboard box came out of Baggage Claim in Atlanta, the box was there but the cooler & food was gone.

The fact that it happens at all shows that there is not a clear procedure in place to preserve people's dignity (or use common sense), and the fact that these goons are nearly always supported in their actions by the TSA officials instead of reprimanded/fired shows that these incidents are the result of a top-down approach to harass and intimidate people. Of course, you have to rush to the defense of gov't no matter what happens...even when it involves humiliating disabled children, groping old women, etc.

I'm with Redwingtom on this.
Stop trying to over-inflate the negativity just for the sake of complaining about a facet of our government you do not like.
The TSA can teach their personnel more common sense on how to be people-sensitive, but you can't just blanket an entire operation simply because you disagree with its existence. I don't personally like the TSA, and I don't think they discourage terrorism very well, but come up with something more substantial.

Hire some El Al screeners and you can have truly effective airline security.

RE: 12 year old girl in wheelchair tries to blow up plane
Nobody will ever hijack a Domestic Airliner again for a 9/11 style suicide mission.
1. Passengers will beat anyone that tries to a pulp.
2. USAF shoot down authority
The next airline terrorist disaster will be a body cavity bomb or an air cargo aircraft hijacked by an insider. A Fed-Ex 757 works just as well as an United one.
TSA can't defend against this

Goons? Really. You're insulting quite a few military veterans with your toxicity buddy!
And BTW, PROVE IT!
But what you fail to realize in your rush to automatically denegrate the government no matter what they do, is that airline passengers have virtually no rights here. They signed them over when they purchased their tickets. If they don't like it, don't fly. Yeah, it sucks that this girl was young with a terrible illness, but all citizens need to be treated equally, no?

Totally agree. They deter more threats by simply talking to people then they do by grabbing your junk.

Guess what brainiac, the TSA was trying to include a number of their tactics and all I heard from your(rightwing nutjob) side was ***** about how they are taking away your rights.
