I agree, has nothing to do with color (for those of you who never met me, I'm black), opportunity perhaps. As I recall, that shooting did not take place IN Legion Field but on Graymont Ave. nearby. I recall that it was a Loveman Village resident with a "turf war" mentality toward some folks at the game. Did he actually hit anyone?

The incident I'm referring to was during a game between Phillips High & Parker High. IIRC, it was Parker's Homecoming game, and it was on either a Thursday or Friday night. The shots rang out from behind the south end zone, in the confines of the stadium. I pretty much remember where I was seated and the action I took when the shots went off. I got as low as I possibly could in the bleachers. I can't recall if he struck someone with his shots, I'm thinking yes, that at least one person was wounded in the shooting. Wish I could recall the exact year, it was a long time ago. I'm thinking the game was in the 2nd half and of course, had to be cancelled, called off or rescheduled with no one allowed in the stands.

My beloved alma mater West End (RIV -rest in Victory) was involved in a game where shots were fired in the stadium so I don't think it was Phillips involved in the incident described but there may have been another one. I remember fillm of the team hitting the dirt and rolling...Sad that the one thing they looked well coahed on that year was avoiding gun fire. Games now have a TSA sort of feel to enter. One thing encouraging is the crowds to see the sublimely wonderful Wenonah Dragons basketball team this year. I believe Wenonah could compete in the SWAC.

They are wearing ASU colors, so somebody'd have to do some changing...Have an older brother that went to Wenonah...Only reason I tolerate them....Go Herd!!!

Back to what your statement eluded to about shooting incidents in Lesion Field, wonder if there are any documented accounts of such occurrences online?

According to my increasingly faulty memory, that "drop and roll" game was at Lawson Field, not at LF. It was one of the few times a WEHS football game made it on all local channel sports shows.

Do you also believe Alabama could compete in the NFL? I don't ever get this line of thought. At any lower level you have a certain % of players that can play at the next level. At the next level, 100% can play at that level.

I seem to recall TV6 covering the story after the fact, and several young people were behind the on-site reporter, making faces, smiling, laughing and flashing those stupid-assed gang signs, I saw them on TV when I'd gotten home later that night.

I suppose I could send an inquiry to WBRC and see if they have an archive that may be able to shed some light on which schools were involved during the shooting and which venue it took place in...I am 95% certain it was at "Lesion" Field and that Parker & Phillips were playing each other at the time. Three times in my life I recall having to hit the ground because of gunfire in the area at the time, this was one of them.

Do you also believe Alabama could compete in the NFL? I don't ever get this line of thought. At any lower level you have a certain % of players that can play at the next level. At the next level, 100% can play at that level.

No I don't think Bama could play in the NFL...because the NFL requires salary caps which Bama couldn't live with and they are a 90 member team. College team even as good as Bama only has 12-18 pro players few of whom would start as rookies and an NFL team has even in Jags case around 40 real pros who spend all their time at getting better.
The difference is many SWAC teAms do not have 5 real D-1 players whereas Wenonah does...and they have played together as group more than Most Swac teams. But I will amend and say they would win the SIAC...I went to their tourney a couple of times and it was not the quality of the state high school tournament larger classes.

I believe it. There have been more than one at Lawson Field. Vestavia used to go play City school there, and I've never seen so many police in one place.

Most of us who follow basketball have consistently graded 5a above 6a
5a contains more "inner city" schools and best of 5a generally beat best of 6a
Also note for purpose of argument that SIAC a DII league is an easier slam dunk for wenonah. Anyone who saw that team from Houston at the Samford tourney three years ago and who has seen the SWAC or SIAC tourneys and doesn't recognize that an elite high school team can beat someone from these week conferences is just not paying attention. Heck coach Lane (former Blazer) certainly has better recruiting than a lot of college teams.
