Johnson City Press Poll
Looks like some of those in the community are going to be dead set against ETSU football. They think ETSU is too small time and the students are going to get the screw. Check out this poll and look at the comments.

edit. The poll is on the front page.

Quote:there are a lot more reasons to not have a football program than have one. Here's ETSU's chance to not contribute to all the massive orthopedic injuries that come with the bone-crunching violent sport of football. Here's ETSU's chance to not cause hundreds of concussions.

I'd rather see ETSU focus on a sport it could eventually field a championship team in: Golf, Lacrosse, Soccer. Or really build their theater department into the best in the state. Or... or... Be creative. Do something else.

RE: Johnson City Press Poll
We just have to get the truth out there. The financial model must be put out so people can see it and stop the myth that 100% of the money is coming from students. I think students are still being told that. Most do not know about money from FBS game, gate receipts, tv money, donations, etc. They wrongly think it is all on them. The economic impact on the region and the return on investment has to be made public so that everyone can see football is in the best interests of all parties.

The Ivy League schools all sponsor football teams. I guess they're just be rock-cracking neanderthals.

Raise my student fees. Take the extra $100-150 a year; I can live without the two video games I would probably be spending that money on, especially if it means expanding the influence of the university I attend. I'll be long gone by the time the program gets off the ground, but I would do everything in my power to get back here for game #1.

RE: Johnson City Press Poll
Ive said before that while I support football returning, there is a tendancy by supporters to ignore the concerns of others, rather than address them. For example, we all know that the Faculty is largely against football. We also know that traditionally student support has been low. And we have also established that community support for sports other than UT and high schools is poor in this area. The most common response to all of these things is "well they shouldnt be against it" or "they are stupid" etc.

That is not going to work. If the students are not excited, the community at large does not go to the game (other than the die hard football fans), and the faculty blame football for salary issues, this whole thing will fall on its face.

We need an aggressive PR strategy that involves more than just advertisements that gets the average Tri Cities resident excited about it and that also addresses many of the reasons why support hasnt always been there. We need to be open to the finances of it and actually find a model that does not badly hurt the student and the faculty. Most of all we need an incredible amount of money, we need to win, and we need to schedule out of conference games against Virginia Tech and UT. But just telling those that disagree with football that they are wrong is a very bad strategy.

RE: Johnson City Press Poll
I feel that the coaching carousel that has been going on affects people's attitude about college football, i. e. the amount of money that some of these big time coaches are earning along with the payouts that are still going on (see today's Kpt Times-News about UT). At a time when our economy is still not considered to be real strong this may cause some (faculty? - especially when a lot of them probably feel underpaid) to wonder about what's important in our society.
I've also heard that the majority of faculty at MOST colleges/universitys resent the amount of emphasis placed on sports.

And the people have to be told the true costs of FCA versus FBS. Most of what they read is indeed based on high profile FBS programs that pay mega-millions for their coachs. They must understand that our head coach will probably make under $200K and that most of the coaches salaries will be paid from the preceeds of the 1A(FBS) game we play. I believe most of the FCS schools use this as their funding model.

Sure looks like they found a way to pad it. I speak to people all the time about Buc football and the large majority are totally in favor of it.

Could this be the clueless age that we're in. Ask the average person on the street about the nation's $16 trillion + debt and he'll likely not know what you're talking about. Just think, then, how clueless the average person must be about college athletic finances, especially at the highly subsidized mid-major level. I believe the vote would be overwhelming for football if people knew how mid-major college finances worked. In ETSU's case: Would you prefer the university spend $12 million a year on basketball and minor/non-revenue sports, OR would you prefer the university spend $12 million a year first on football/basketball and second the minor sports?

What are the odds of getting the JC Press to pose the question that way?

If they cannot do a poll with one person-one vote then why bother? This poll is a farce.

RE: Johnson City Press Poll
The JC Press would implode if they actually did a factual report on ETSU athletic finances, especially with relation to football. The only line they have is, "ETSU football was losing $1 million a year". They seem brain dead when it comes to mid-major college athletic finances. They seem to be convinced that ETSU is the only college in America that didn't make money or at least break even on its football program. And, consequently, every report or thing they do with relation to ETSU athletics is rigged along those lines.

But it is a factual report. If all schools lose 1 million a year in football, reporting the fact that ETSU was losing that much does not make a wrong report.

Yes but I think the problem with it is that they insinuate that football was the ONLY sport that was losing money. Nowhere have I seen mentioned that all of the sports today except men's basketball are losing millions of dollars a year. To be factual they should have to report that also.
