So i have been reading on our boards that Cristobal was let go today and FIU's leading candidate is butch Davis????? Could this be good for the Conference?

No, he was not directly implicated or sanctioned by the NCAA....With that said I think Butch Davis is a good recruiter but a very overrated coach.

I don't know if FIU is poised to have a great 2013 season or not- but let's say they are....

Would the admin at FIU be thinking, we have a great season Mario is gone to a big school, but maybe, with Davis, he sticks around past 2013 since he just started?

Well the AD at FIU worked twice with Butch. He was the Assistant AD at Miami when Butch was hired and when Butch went to the NFL he got Pete Garcia with the Browns. The two are always together around town and the FIU community has speculated that Pete Garcia wanted Mario to leave last year to either Pitt or Rutgers so that he could offer his friend the job. Mario was loyal to the school and stayed and ultimately that decision proved costly as the poor season this year was enough to get him fired and allow Pete to hire his friend. Moving into C-USA FIU can pay their HC more money. We had the highest paid coach in the Sun Belt, so a salary of $1 Million is what I'm figuring the next coach will make.


Pete Garcia is also known for making splashy hires. We've hired Rick Pitino's son, Bruce Arena's son, Isiah Thomas and with Butch it would be the next in a number of big name hires he's made. I would rather have Manny Diaz from Texas who has ties to Miami as the next coach. We'll see what happens.

Seems like Cristobal got screwed. That is a mighty short leash.

I'll go one step further I think he's a terrible in game coach. I've seen more talented wasted on Butch Davis teams than anywhere in the country. He had as many players drafted during his time at UNC than just about anyone and he never did better than 8 wins in an extremely mediocre ACC. He wasted amazing talent in his time at Miami and really accomplished very little. He is a very good recruiter, but part of that is also related to something I've heard Coach Steve Logan say. He's always recruited wearing a "sexy sweater." Neither of those places are tough to land top talent at. At non-AQ schools it's much more about identifying talent, because for the most part you aren't going to land very many guys with a bunch of AQ offers.

Good recruiter is code word for good cheater. Look at the programs Miami and UNC that is really known for excessive cheating. Only Clint Hurtt at Louisville is a bigger cheater.

No doubt he's always been helped by recruiting at places that are pretty easy to recruit to, and the fact that he is either an outright cheater or just turns a blind eye to his assistants cheating. He's managed to escape anything linking him to Black Santa's cheating at UNC, but there's no way he was completely in the dark about his agent connections.

I thnk Ellis Johnson would be an excellent hire for FIU

Why would anyone want to take on B Davis. He was a failure with the Browns, left Miami right before the new president cracked down on admissions, making student athletes the same standard as a reg student. And even cheating couldn't get UNC above 8-5.

I think Id rather take a chance on Randy Shannon, Houston Nutt, Dan Hawkins, Bill Cubit or Derek Dooley first. All would do a decent job at FIU.

What happened to FIU this past season?

From what I remember, they had a lot of injuries early and never got on track.

Even though they're both of questionable character, if USM got Petrino and FIU Butch Davis, that would bring some high-level names to the conference.
