To be named D-Coord. at Alburn. Maybe USM won't have to pay him the full buyout.

Unfortunately we do. The wording of the contract never mentioned a reduced rate in the event he was fired and later found employment. That was the holdup in firing him was that we had to have the $2.1 million in hand. The sad part is that what it ended up being was him making $2.8 million for 11 months and in return we received the worst single season in school history and it just happened to be the 100th year of football at USM

I thought the prior AD and his search committee hired Johnson and negotiated the contract.

Is this incorrect?

He should be a success. After all, he stymied the USM offense pretty good

Ahh...you are correct. I thought he was an interim during the hiring process...but looks like he came just after.

RE: Ellis Johnson
Johnson was hired by our former AD, although the current AD, Hammond, sat on the search committee. Worse contract you have ever seen. Hammond did voice concerns over the contract, those concerns feel on deaf ears.

The new AD did hire the new basketball coach who is well thought of by the Southern Miss faithful.

To be fair, I'll bet nobody at USM ever imagined a one-and-done season. Not even Johnson's agent, who in hindsight should be sent the nicest of Christmas gift baskets: $2.1 million dollars for one season's work at Southern Miss? That's one hell of a bank heist.

$2.8 mil for one season. He drew a years salary and the buyout was another $2.1 mil.

Fingers crossed on this whole Mayan Calendar thing... I've never really been into mysticism or spirituality, but if it turns out to be true I won't be complaining.

I've never heard of a contract like that, and I can't imagine why anyone would write a contract like that unless a kickback was involved. The FBI should keep a close eye on any bank accounts held by Jeff Hammond, Aubrey Lucas, or Richard Giannini.

hypothetical question - Could Southern Miss have demoted Ellis Johnson to DC and hired a new coach? This way Southern Miss at least gets something from that contract.

I believe that was an option, letting his staff go and keeping him. But he didn't want to go for that.

ej was given the option but knew even by doing that he would be gone in a year or 2. he took the payday & now cashes in @ auburn. While i like Gus i hope auburn never wins a game as long as ej is there.
