Denver Post reporting Butch Jones accepts offer to be Colorado's football coach
I guess this deserves it's own thread

Quote:Butch Jones accepts offer to be Colorado's football coach
By The Denver Post
Cincinnati football coach Butch Jones has accepted the coaching job at Colorado, a source close to the negotation told The Denver Post on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day, he said he expected to make a decision "pretty soon" about whether to accept an offer to become Colorado's new coach.

Jones was at another Belk Bowl news conference Wednesday, this time at the game's host city, Charlotte, N.C. Reporters were told before the news conference they could not ask questions about Jones' job status. However, Jones did answer a few questions.

When asked if he expected a resolution soon, he said: "Yes, pretty soon." He added there was no deadline.

Jones, 44, said the ongoing speculation has not been a distraction to his team as they prepare for the bowl game.

"We talk to our players all the time about the clutter and handling distractions and from day one, the way our players have managed their business has been exceptional. It has not been a distraction," Jones told reporters. "I've been very up front and honest with them. They understand. All this speculation is really a compliment to them. It has nothing to do with me. It's a compliment to our players and our coaching staff, the way we play the game, the way we execute the plan to win. It has not been one distraction at all."

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, Jones met again with Bearcats athletic director Whit Babcock on Wednesday morning before flying to Charlotte. He is scheduled to fly back to Cincinnati after the news conference.

CU officials extended a contract offer Monday and were hoping to hear back by Tuesday, but Jones' negotiations with Cincinnati officials have extended the delay.

During a news conference Tuesday in Cincinnati about the bowl game, Jones threatened to walk out after two questions were asked about his coaching future. Jones flew Wednesday to Charlotte with the school's sports information director; Cincinnati (9-3) will play Duke (6-6) in the Dec. 27 game.

"I'm still the football coach here," Jones said Tuesday in Cincinnati, further muddying the situation. "That speaks volumes."

Jones, 50-27 in six seasons as a head coach, was offered a five-year contract worth $13.5 million Monday during almost nine hours of meetings in Boulder with Colorado officials, including Mike Bohn, CU president Bruce Benson and school chancellor Phil DiStefano.

Jones on Sunday spent four hours at Purdue talking about its vacancy, which was filled Tuesday night when the Boilermakers hired Darrell Hazell from Kent State.

Yup, call Tressel, now.

I hope Jones enjoys his money, he just took on a massive rebuilding project that will take 4-5 years at least. The odds of success are pretty low, career suicide if you ask me.

It'll sound like sour grapes right now, but I really don't have a lot of respect for the way Jones handled this entire process. You get the sense that this entire process was a very public negotiation ploy.

Oh well. Onward.

I really, really hope Tressel has some interest. He would be a home run hire.

Just saw it in the Enquirer. Sure would be nice if coaches honored their contracts - guess money's the only important thing nowadays. Oh well, he did well here - not as well as BK and I'm sure his tour at CU will be "interesting", i.e. get used to losing. At least, he can still "represent the C".

Especially because Jones has never had to build a program from scratch. Twice he followed BK and took over programs BK had taken to heights they had never gone before (and Jones I don't think ever quite reached those heights). UC was 32-7 the three years prior to Butch Jones as 23-14 during Jones' three years. I think the future looked bright. Jones was the best recruiter UC has ever had, and I loved the physicality his defense showed by the end of his time here, but I think he is a huge risk for Colorado and Colorado is a huge risk for him.

Next coach In.

No thank you. He will send the program back to the Minter era.

I think it goes without saying, Whit really needs to hit a grand slam with the next hire. They need a coach that can win, a coach that recruit under challenging circumstances, and someone who can help hold the fans and boosters together until realignment finds UC a home.

Just reached out to Butch Jones, who said any report of him taking the Colorado job is "absolutely false."

RE: Denver Post reporting Butch Jones accepts offer to be Colorado's football coach
seem to be quite a few sources now denying it's a done deal....

Just tuned to a Colorado station on line who happened to be interviewing Jim Kelly from UC when they broke in with the Denver Post report which was complete news to Kelly who was very gracious. As they finished up with him the host just broke in with a text exchange with "a high-ranking Colorado official" who said NO when directly asked if Jones has accepted the offer.

Well, of course he's probably going to say that until he has an opportunity to talk to his players -- so that he can say he "did the right thing" and let them be the first to know he intended to accept Colorado's offer.

I have no idea what you do for a living or even if you work. But, if someone came to you and offered you a 60% raise, you would take it. Probbaly quicker than Jones did.
