Why does Butch Jones staying make Cincinnati any more attractive to the ACC?

He's not saying Butch Jones will have any effect. He's saying he thinks more dominos will fall to the point that we get invited within the next year.

Exactly. Only a matter of time before Maryland cracks the code for how to get out of paying the full $50 million ACC exit fee and richer schools are sure to follow.

Hopefully the floodgates don't open to the point where FSU, Clemson, UNC, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, UVA, Miami, and NC State all leave. We need a few cracks not a complete destruction of the ACC. If all thats left is Duke, Wake, BC, and our former Big East mates thats not a huge upgrade. If too many schools leave the ACC you wonder if the Big East picks up the scraps, unlikely but we need two to four schools to leave not six to eight.

Right now UConn is next in line followed by Cincinnati for all sports or Navy as a football only. If the Navy option is off the table it goes UConn, Cincinnati, and a mad fight between USF, UCF, Temple, and Tulane to backfill. I still believe we need to watch out for Navy or Tulane because the academics might get their way after the Louisville move.

I'm seriously not trying to stalk you, but what is with your obsession with Tulane?

I wouldn't say for certain UConn is next in line. When they came up for a vote the last go round they only garnered 4 votes. UC was never voted on. Whose to say UConn would get any more than the 4 they go the last time or that UC wouldn't get more than 4 votes?

I thought they were on list that the Big 12 was looking a while back. For the Big East Tulane really isn't a great addition; however, a more powerful conference could be looking to add the New Orleans market and select them.

If the ACC loses Georgia Tech and UVA to the Big Ten and Clemson and Florida State to the Big 12 how does the ACC get back to 14? UConn and Cincy should be locks but they probably need to pick someone from the south. Do they want another Florida school if Miami is still there? Navy football only? I start going down the list of schools and Tulane is about the only logically choice I can find.

Agree. If they remain in the ACC, the southern schools do not want UCONN in the league and BC does not want to share the spotlight with them in New England either. The only schools that were okay with them apparently were Virginia, Duke, Wake Forest and North Carolina and that was due to academics. The southern schools want to improve the ACC brand in football and they recognize the limited recruiting base in the New England states. I think if they had to do it all over again they never would have invited BC either. UC provides the best opportunity for football out there without worsening the strength of the basketball side of things.

I hope you are right that Cincinnati would be next in line. The problem for the ACC is the lack strong football candidates after Cincinnati. You are looking at UConn, Temple, Navy, and Tulane unless you start expanding into Texas which wouldn't be an awful idea. The Big East had this problem and went into Texas and plucked a few out west. The lack of quality football out east has made it difficult for the ACC and the Big East.

Edit: Unless they want a bunch of Florida schools because UCF and USF play better football than UConn, Temple, Navy, and Tulane.

RE: Butch Jones turns down Colorado job
By the time he was asked at 10:23 p.m. Wednesday night to verify details of a story Janson had assembled addressing issues that had dogged him at UC, Jones asked for some breathing room, again via text: " Please wait. Strongly considering staying."

That led to another exchange Thursday morning at 8:37 a.m. when Janson asked whether the story was good to go: " Wait, Think I am staying. After that, going to get a drink."

I may be reading too much into this, but I like that Butch used the word "staying" instead of simply saying that he was withdrawing his name from the Colorado job.

I read it that way too. But who the hell knows. "Staying" could mean staying until the offer comes from UT. If he's "staying" meaning for next year, there has to be a press conf. coming up to announce it and a new deal. If not, then he's still looking.

If this were for real, one would expect him to go a bit further, so that the assistants could re-start recruiting with a straight face, and the players could get in the right frame of mind for bowl prep. Something like "My agent is putting something together with the administration, and we anticipate an announcement soon" would suffice.
