Here is Haynes/staff latest recruit: http://247sports.com/Player/Jake-McVay-28882

Local product. That brings the total to 14 (unofficially) and I expected the class to be 20-21, so we will see where it ends up on Wednesday.

I am afraid that we are not getting a D1 player with this signing.

We can only hope he turns out like many previous KSU recruits that took their only offer and used it as motivation for success. I saw that he also just picked up an offer from BG.

Hopefully the Melchiori connection doubled with the short drive to Kent St allows us to beat BG in this late recruiting battle. I wonder who the last 6 or 7 recruits will be? As I type this, there are only 48 hrs left until signing day for this years recruiting class, unless Haynes is keeping quite a few open scholarships in hopes of tracking late qualifiers, transfers from Arkansas Ohio St or other D1 schools, & JC/CC kids?

Funny you would mention that. I always wondered why Hazell was never able to bring any fringe players over from the Buckeyes. Kids sunk down on the depth chart with no hope there but a chance to shine with us. That plus the Glenville connection, we never got anyone in his 2 years despite those kids going to other MAC schools, then Haynes comes right in and gets one.

I think that it is due to the ground work that Hazell did. Hopefully, we can continue to build on it.

Best of luck to Haynes/staff in closing out an awesome class next Wednesday!

The thing that isn't cool, is that they rank us the 9th best class in the MAC and 112 in the nation. That's not very good.

Those are based on total points, so it appears so bad right now because so many schools are reporting more verbals. Obviously the more players you have the higher score you will also have. If you run the MAC rankings by average score/player we're 3rd behind Toledo and NIU. I think our class is shaping up nicely, good quality players and a nice blend of positions.

Ave score per player now we are behind BG, Toledo, NIU, WMU, CMU,and tied with UB. Ahead of OU, MU, EMU, Zits, BSU, and UMASS. It's close enough to wait 48 hours and see where it all shakes out, but I disagree and say if you take a 4 year sample size and measure the top classes of that period, those will likely be the best teams.

RE: Kent State Football Recruiting Class 2013
I know that it would seem that way, but people have taken those recruiting rankings and found very little correlation between them and success on the field. There are just too many other factors that are more important in the success of college football teams, plus the ranking themselves are suspect for a lot of reasons. Coaching, coaching, coaching. Plus, the player rankings beyond the very top ones--the ones MAC schools get--are even more suspect. The recruiting services just don't pay as close attention to the lesser players. You just have to hope and trust your coaches get the talent that they can work with and develop, regardless of the number of stars they get or don't get. One school gets five 3-star players and another school only gets one? Absolutely meaningless down the road.

If these rankings had any real value, people would pay attention to how they worked out 3-4 years down the road and virtually nobody does because no one has ever found any meaning in it.

May be time for a reminder that Dri Archer was unranked out of HS and that we were his only DI offer.

I like this paragraph in the article.
"Scott said the Golden Flashes, who went 11-3 last year and played Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.Com Bowl, first contacted him Wednesday and he said he has Mainland teammate, Jontey Byrd, to thank for that. Scott said that Byrd, a 5-foot-11, 280-pound defensive tackle, recently took an official visit to Kent State and put in a good word for him."

Bringing in teammates can never hurt in the transition to college. With Scott being a guard and Byrd a DT they should be challenging each other at every practice.

Where did you see this? They beat my alma mater, Mentor, the kids are fantastic players. I was surprised yet extremely happy when I read this.

Here is a tweet from whom I am guessing is their high school coach from a few days ago:

@Coach_JBell
"Nick and Nate Holley have committed to Kent State. Congratulations!!"

Danh63,

Are you trolling and being sarcastic when you say they are winners or are you truly being sarcastic (I see you root for Toledo) when you say the Holley are winners? Here's to hoping you aren't being sarcastic.

RE: Kent State Football Recruiting Class 2013
Nick was a first team all state quarterback and Nathan a third team linebacker. Toledo wanted them but had none left to offer them. They are 4.0 students and they wanted them to get academic scholarships this year with hopes of getting them athletic ones next year. After their visit and athletic offers from Kent they decided on Kent. They truly are fantastic players. Watch any game they played this year and you will see. Both of them are three year starters and Whitmer.
