That isn't true, UT lost money last year 4 million dollars, however the athletic department has been giving the acedemic side 6 million dollars for many many years. add that back and they wouldn't have lost money last year either. They have decided that the athletic department won't have to keep giving that gift now. I would be surprised if UT posted another "loss".

He's half right. There's really only about 10-15 programs in the country that truly operate in the black without massaging numbers. SC, Notre Dame, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Ohio State are a few. Tennessee had been.
None of the mid level programs turn a true profit, they're always propped up with fees to "break even," but as far as sport by sport bringing in more money than they spend, no way in hell, not even at the places that turn a total profit.

UT used to be able to give to the acedemic side out of their atheletic profits..and still have lots of money left over.. that is no longer true.
Now they have had to ask to stop making those gifts in order to buy out a coach and hire a new one...big news here in Knoxville today where college profs and students are protesting the prospect of paying a football coach 5 million dollars to NOT coach.. and pay another one 4 million each year TO coach while cutting millions from math, science, etc. etc.....
IT is true that there are just a few schools (maybe 15 at most) that actually make money with their athletic programs.. UT has been losing money with athletics for several years now.. they have spent down their reserve funds to less than 2 million.. Alabama has around 90 million in reserve to buy out coaches, build and maintain facalities, etc..but they are one of the few!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most schools athletic programs lose money... what I was trying to say is most of them don't give up on football like we did........................

So how big would the UT reserve be if they hadn't been giving away 6 million a year over the last 15-20 years or so?
Also it has been 1 year (last year) they lost money not several.

They pretty much broke even 2010-11 (up 14k but still "made" money"

The trend was moving down with all the buyouts but actually hadn't lost money until last year.

As for giving up football.. since it made about 40 million last year.. how big a hole would the rest of the department be without it?

Notice there is absolutely no mention of this anywhere on etsubucs.com or the ETSU Athletics facebook page. I'm sure theyre still under their strict orders from Dave to delete all posts mentioning the "F word" I know they've deleted several of mine in the past. I posted the article to their wall today, but I'm sure its a matter of minutes before they take it down.

Time for that crowd to BE GONE. There was an ape named Willie B at the Atlanta Zoo several years ago and when he died, someone asked what his full name was. His full name turned out to be Willie B Gone.

Alabama gives several millions to the acedemic side each year too. so I still think they are better off than my friends here at UT. I live down here and have to hear about how bad things are at the big state univ every day..
Again.. all I was trying to say was this.. ETSU said they dropped football because it lost a million dollars.. Ut football lost 4 million on football..and they didn't give up and quit..they are still playing and trying to improve the program!!!!!!! I didn't mean to upset you folks who have orange blood in your veins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was commenting on my school's poor excuse for being quitters.....

You keep misunderstanding me, Tennessee football didn't lose 4 million dollars last year, the athletic department did. The football program made about 40 million. Football profit everybody else drained that profit and lost money.
