ECU hate?
I sympathize with ECU fans taking a beating, I really do. Tulane fans are taking in some ways a worse beating. The difference in the amount of chit you take is that unlike Tulane, a significant portion of your fans are actually starting these pissing matches. And you just got invited. And you're not a full member. It comes off as entitlement.

Tulane and ECU have different advantages and different problems. In some ways we are the mirror image of one another. ECU has a large local fan base in a small market, with decent-to-solid football, but doesn't fit the institutional profile that people want to have in the league (directional name, mediocre academically, not considered a national brand as a university). Tulane is the opposite in nearly every way. We are poor on the field lately and have a small fan base in a large market. But we DO fit the institutional profile that the all sports schools want in a full member.

Now, back to the pissing matches point: if Tulane fans went around with an insecure chip on our shoulder and started posting in every thread about how great our academics are and how we have a national reputation as an AAU school and how we don't have a direction in our name and how we have been playing major college football for over 100 years -- people would RIGHTLY hate our fans, and our school, and would look for any occasion to cut us down to size for all of our problems.

So the answer is that some ECU fans are a little insecure and have been doing a lot if d*ck measuring against other fans. If that's not you, don't take any of it personally, just realize where it comes from.

Of course we don't have the TV market, which seems to be running (ruining) college football at the moment, but we do have is a pretty rich tradition of football at ECU. The VT and WVU wins back to back in 08 were big. NCSU in 2010. We have a pretty good resume of beating BCS teams. 50,000 screaming fans every game, I think, is something the old BE and new BE members should be proud to have in their conference.

I'm not trying to start a pissing match, I just want to know some of opinions of the other fan bases.

One last thing, I've seen the SDSU posters running their mouths constantly, I can't wait to play you guys just because...

04-cheers

Just to be clear, I don't "hate" ECU because you share so many historical things in common with UH (us against the world, etc.) . . . Despite all of the great things ECU brings to the table (winning, stadium, attendance, etc.), I still think ECU was the wrong add at this time because of the national media/public perception of ECU and because I don't believe it can put up solid Nielsen ratings in a media market/geographic region. . . I hope you prove me wrong because now that you are here, I will have your back at every turn as long as you and your fans support this Big East Conference attempt to stay nationally relevant (which is why I didn't support Conference USA, which had essentially lost its institutional drive) . . .

As to SDSU, I just don't believe the fans on this board really understand what Aresco and the Big East presidents are trying to accomplish long-term . . . I sometimes get the feeling that SDSU are like the cool surfer dudes in a fraternity who just want to invite all of their other cool friends to join without regard to what they bring to the fraternity long-term instead of reaching out to invite the Indian student body president, president of the computer club, and the really studious kid in the library, who nobody really knows who he is but he drives a Porsche, the faculty love him, and he has a hot French girlfriend . . .

Great businesses/organizations/college athletic conferences are built by unique people with a single-minded, undivided, commitment to achieve greatness TOGETHER . . . not just hangout with your other cool friends and tell each other how we are the best of the rest (ie., Conference USA) . . . so welcome to the Big East and never let that chip on your shoulder get knocked off . . . 04-cheers

Why should we have to explain or justify our inclusion anymore? Why should we care what some naysayers think of our inclusion? Besides, if things keep going the way they are, there may not be a BE.............at least not in "football".

^^^Because of these kind of posters. If you guys ever considered supporting your conference the same way you do your team, life would be great. Instead It's all about the "big Least" and how it should fail...BUT you guys want in, even if just for football. So, you get in just for football and damn..."we should Not be football only"etc. ECU does not have a big national following and most peoples perception comes from the active fanbase on message boards, which comes off as a bunch of hypocritical crying *******.

Personally, I think ECU is a good add at this time. I DO think 50,000 fans in the stadium says alot, if every nbe school had 50k in the stands there would be no doubt about the strength and support of the conference. I would like all schools to lead, strengthen, grow, and support the conference they chose to be a part of. So, do what you do...pack the stands, play good football...but quit bitching.04-cheers

I'm stating a fact man. This is nothing against the BE. You take one post and make it sound like I'm putting down the BE. That's not the case and if you go back and look at the any posts I've written, the same applies. I'm making two points in my post above.

1. We shouldn't care what others think about us to the point that we have to constantly explain why we deserved or earned or was handed a Big East invite.

2. Ask most teams in the current Big East who haven't left yet, if they would stay given an invite to another "bigger" conference and the answer would be yes. Period. No if, ands or butts about it. So the devotion you speak of doesn't exist. All I read on here and everywhere else is how BE schools are looking for a way out to include the BB onlies.

Having said this, I hope for all our sakes the Big East survives and thrives and that ECU is part of the "Best of the Rest" as they say, but I'm not gonna sugarcoat it.

You're "quit the bitchin" statement basically reiterates the point I was making
I was not trying to pick on you, only using your post as an example to answer the OP.
And everything I said was my opinion. Every other poster has said basically the same things, although maybe a little more polished.

RE: ECU hate?
You can't use internet message board posters as an accurate assessment. Just like ECU and UCF fan bases don't hate one another overall like they do on the internet.
The answer to your question with regard to some message board posters is simple, it's insecurity and ignorance on their part.

Again, you missed the point. You seem to think that there are no areas where your school would measure up short. Well, newsflash. There are areas in which each of us measure up short or we'd all be in the SEC. Accept it, embrace it, work on it, and stop being so insecure about it and starting fights about where other schools don't measure up.

And to the next post from a cougar - we want to add one f'n team that is better than some/most of the adds, I don't think that makes us Spicoli ordering a Pizza to class, Mr. Hand.

Well really it's a stupid question to have asked in the first place. Pretty sure we all know the reasons why this isn't a happy relationship on both sides. I'd like those issues to get resolved, but I doubt they do in the short term.

No I didn't miss the point. Most of your/the Big East's issues with ECU aren't fixable in the short term, or really ever. Our market is our market. Our name is our name. Our academic mission really is what it is and while ECU has improved a lot in this area it's not going to become Harvard overnight. If you care to propose solutions to the issues you raised then I'm sure ECU would gladly work on them.
