Cincinnati coach Butch Jones reportedly “torn between” Colorado or staying

The Denver Post
Respected Cincinnati Enquirer reporter Bill Koch wrote in today’s edition that University of Cincinnati football coach Butch Jones is “torn between” accepting an offer from Colorado — believed to be five years and at least $13.5 million — or remaining in Cincinnati.
A Michigan native, Jones loves the city of Cincinnati, Koch told me. And Cincinnati officials are said to be willing to sweeten his contract in order to convince him to stay.
Negatives with his current job include Nippert Stadium, which is in need of a major upgrade without a known revenue source to pay the bill. And the fact that the Big East Conference is losing Cincinnati’s natural rivals (Louisville and Pittsbugh) to the ACC, and the diluted league will lose leverage when college football goes to a four-team playoff in 2014.
Cincinnati had previously scheduled a news conference for today (11 a.m. mountain) to discuss its Belk Bowl matchup with Duke. If Jones attends that news conference it may be a good sign for the Bearcats.
After meeting with Colorado officials for about nine hours in Boulder on Monday, Jones reportedly returned to his Cincinnati home after midnight.
Jones had been originally scheduled to depart from Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield t via charter at about 5:30 p.m. but agreed to delay his departure for several hours to engage in further talks with Colorado.
Colorado officials must hope that Jones picks CU this morning and before that bowl-related news conference. If he doesn’t, it will be nervous time in Boulder.
