RE: UCF vs. Tulsa Controversial "PUNT TD" Play Video Breakdown
In a somewhat ironic twist:

The CUSA Supervisor of Officials who was at the CUSA Championship Game...and oversaw his crew and his REPLAY official (stated he didn't want to talk about why the PUNT was never reviewed), was the SAME Official ESPN had on air last night on Monday Night Football, who, after the Redskins scored a TD off a fumble, said during the review, that the play was going to be overturned....was WRONG on that play too. (Play stood as called!)

If you looked at the replay, half of our guys saw that official waiving his arms and stopped.

That's right they did, but the ball was still bouncing, rolling, & moving even as the official began 2 wave his arms. The ball was still a live ball even as the official was waving his arms, but no whistle was blown 2 indicate official stoppage of play. It was up to the UCF defense to stop the movement of the ball B4 the ball could B downed & marked @ a particular spot on the field of play. The f-ball was still moving when TU's Trey Watts picked up the ball.

Seeing it live @ the stadium, I never thought the play was over until Trey scored the TD.

It was a freak play, due partly to the inept ref waving his arms early B4 the actually play/ball was over. I do agree though that the play should have @ least been reviewed. Whether or not it would've been over turned is doubtful.

I wouldn't want anything like this to happen in ANY game...and it shouldn't. My problem is not so much with this play...but...a pattern of incompetence in CUSA officiating. It is just the worst.

ARTICLE 2. a. A live ball becomes a dead ball as provided in the rules or when an official sounds his whistle (even though inadvertently) or otherwise signals the ball dead (A.R. 4-2-1-II and A.R. 4-2-4-I).

I'm pretty sure a ref waiving his hands over his head would be covered under the "otherwise" clause above.

It was a head's up play by the Tulsa player, but it is a travesty that the refs didn't even allow time for a review or even confer to see if they all saw the same thing.

Sorry UCF...You got hosed to the max on that. I agree with GOL...it was a game changer and momentum shifting play. The officials in that game should never be allowed back on a FB field again. 03-puke There is NO excuse for that incompetence.[/i]

Ha ha.... They have nothing on WAC officials. See the LaTech vs USU game.

It was a heads up play by the Tulsa player, as he had nothing to lose. Even if he botched the recovery or fumbled during the return, it would still be Tulsa's ball at the spot that UCF batted it.

The only error on the field was on the UCF player who batted the ball instead of catching it or trying to down it on the field.

The ref who threw the bean bag did exactly as he was supposed to do. He threw the bean bag to mark the spot where the ball would be spotted if it was subquently downed by UCF. It would then have been Tulsa's ball at the spot.

The ref. did not throw the bean bag to indicate the play was over.

How about you watch the play before you criticize it? Good idea? Yea?

He waved his arms, signifying the dead ball. Then afterwards he threw the beanbag.
I don't understand why people are stuck on this beanbag thing. Who the hell is arguing about the bean bag?

The argument is the waving of the hands signifying the dead ball. Play Over

Top Right Ref.
1. Waved His Arms, signifying dead ball, after UCF touched the ball
(UCF players stop because play is called dead)
2. Ref throws beanbag **WHICH WE ALL AGREE MEANS NOTHING**
(Watts then takes it back)

That is the weirdest part. If he thought the play was over, why throw the beanbag? Just run to the spot and stand there. If he thought the play was still live, why wave your hands?

Yes. Official may have mistakenly waved his arms but no whistle was blown so play continues.

RE: UCF vs. Tulsa Controversial "PUNT TD" Play Video Breakdown
The beanbag marks where the ball landed for the punt. It's just a marker to record the Stats. It can be thrown at any time. If the play was dead, where the ball landed and where the ball was touched by UCF are two different locations. Where the ball landed is where Stat would record the kick for the punter. Where UCF had the ball would be the spot for the play to begin the next drive.

He was calling the play dead. That is the only thing waving your arms means. It was ignored by the head ref and the play continued.
