If you see the elderly walking from Kroger towards highland, offer to give them a lift.

Many live in Wesley Towers or the home next to The Elegant Farmer (can't remember its name right now) and walk to Kroger for groceries.

I try to do this when I see them, especially if they are having a hard time getting around or if the weather is really hot/really cold.

Just roll down the window and ask them if they need a lift to Wesley Towers.

Remember, that's someone's grandmother/grandfather/mom/dad/etc and you'd want the same done for yours.

Thanks,

I too have seen them walking. I have offered them rides several times but they are too leery of riding with strangers. That is a result of today's society. It's been several years ago, but I worked with the office at Wesley and they scheduled times that I could pick the residents up at the home and give them rides. The residents felt much safer knowing the rides were arranged by the home. Sorry to say I haven't done that in several years.

I've only had a few turn me down, most - like the lady I gave a ride to this afternoon (who was clearly out of breath and had had a stroke) - gladly get in, especially if you ask them if they are going to Wesley house.

That's a great thing. I have a soft spot for the elderly. I stopped and picked up a man a couple of weeks ago. I mean he had fallen and had managed to get to his knees with his cane. No idea how long he had been there. I lifted him and realized his back was soaking wet ( light drizzle). He must have gone down hard. I helped him home. Seems like he said he's 92. I followed up a few days ago and learned that he had broken his hip and is in rehab. I was told that he wouldn't be going home as his kids saw this as their chance to get him in a nursing home. Possibly where he needs to be, but sad nonetheless.

Both great ideas, and GT, that was a wonderful thing you did. After dealing with the elderly the past few years. You do develop a soft spot for them. They were just like us once. They needed nothing. Most are too proud to ask. Keep it up guys. I'm proud of you.

they really accept the rides?

I guess I'm cynical but I'd be scared to hop in a car where some young dude rolled up and offered a ride.

Not so wonderful. It would take a real low-life to not stop in that situation.

I've done this before. An elderly man was walking from Kroger and it was 100+ degrees outside and he looked like he was struggling with the heat. He hadn't even made it onto Highland yet and I asked him if I could take him somewhere. I gave him a ride and it took less than 5 minutes to help make a difference for someone. I encourage others to do this is well.

My mom broke her hip at 91 and we really hoped she would be able to return to her apartment, but it was not possible. Among other health problems, the anesthetics and pain killers needed to deal with such an injury often accelerates mental decline. It broke my heart but we had to put her in a nursing home. Thankfully, while her mental acuity declined, she remained very active and sociable until the end. It might seem sad to us, but she liked the nursing home. We brought her to my house on the first Thanksgiving after she entered the nursing home and she absolutely freaked out; the nursing home was safe and she knew it, and leaving was too traumatic to ever again try.

That's awesome that it worked out for you. My dad couldn't have handled it, even though its where he needed to be. He was bedridden for almost a year and a half and legally blind. I honestly don't think he would have lasted a month in one.

Speaking about nursing homes I can speak from my experience with my mother. She had a stroke and was paralyzed on her right side and lost her ability to speak coherently. My father was advised to find a nursing home and he ended up placing her in Cordova Nursing Home on Germantown Pkwy. The care was marginal. The physical therapy that was being paid for was basically non existent. The smell was not good. Poorly run and the staff seemingly had regular turnover. My mother suffered from bed sores and my father would often have to request diaper changes. He was there every day for almost two years before he had her moved to the NHC nursing home in Sommerville, Tn.
The difference in every aspect of elderly care was amazing. She got excellent care for the remaining three years of her life. The point I am making is to be careful where you place an elderly person in need of nursing care. We found out the hard way that nursing homes can be your worst nightmare. Several years after my mother passed away my father needed to be placed in a nursing home. Needless to say he went to NHC in Sommerville who still had the same staff as when my mother was a patient there, and they knew him well.
