It's spelled d-e-f-i-n-i-t-e-l-y.

It's "prima donna".

"Athleticism" and "physicality" are non-words coined by lazy ex-jock color commentators.

"Winningest" really irritates the Mrs.

Cachet (kah-shay): "A mark or quality, as of distinction, individuality, or authenticity"

Cache (kash): "A hiding place especially for concealing and preserving provisions or implements"

Cashe: "So you can't even spell your mis-used word."

Athleticism and physicality may not have been words when they were coined, but they are now (at least they are in some dictionaries). One coined term that I hope never becomes a word is “trickeration”. We already have a perfectly good word with the same meaning: trickery.

Hence my post on the evolution of language thanks to the use of it by the ignorant, lazy or "innovative" and it's spread to the masses.

But in the case of athleticism, I think it was appropriate (there was no existing appropriate word). Not in the case of trickeration.

You're right. There was no existing appropriate word. It exists now because dim bulbs couldn't enunciate ideas like "fast", "nimble", "agile", "strong" "graceful"...

in fact, I think the internet may speed the undoing of the entire language, but that's a completely different conversation.

You've probably got a point and it's sad if texttardation is indeed the undoing of the language. I'm sure the Interwebz saves everything, even beyond archive.org, so if a potential future boss goes snooping, I don't feel like being left behind.

That would be "tough row to hoe". Just saying. (It's a farming expression not a chain gang expression.)

How about "toeing the company line" vs "towing the company line"?

The use of the word "infer" when you actually mean "imply"

It's not a big issue until the error causes miscommunication that leads to a serious problem. But in general, it is not that important. The only real problem is that it lowers others' opinions of your intelligence (or commitment to accuracy) if the error is repeated time and again.

I agree 100% with the bolded sentence in your reply. All of us make mistakes when we're lazy or rushed. However, repeated inattention to correct (simple) grammar will eventually affect a poster's credibility in many fellow posters' eyes.

I suppose that I need to start using "congratulations" rather than "congrats."

I know this has been said but "loose" instead of "lose" grinds my gears.

One thing that's really big on political message boards is when the media starts using buzzwords and people somehow adopt them with no prior knowledge of the word. "Vitriol" was really big in 2010ish and "mandate" is being thrown around now.

Here is another one; using "lost" when saying "We lost the football game!" Really? Did anyone find it? LOL

The actual word is "loss".

Gonna disagree here.

lost (lôst, lst)
v.
Past tense and past participle of lose.
Having not been or unlikely to be won; unsuccessful: a lost battle; a lost cause.

lose (lz)
v. lost (lôst, lst), los·ing, los·es
To fail to win; fail in: lost the game; lost the court case.

The actual word is "loss".

"lost" is a verb, "loss" is a noun.

To say "We loss the football game," is incorrect.

Athleticism is a word that encompasses all of those attributes. Sometimes there is no need for great detail.
