Gotta be a scam! No one gives away assets! Not to run of the mill employees. He ought to off shore them, that's what real American business people do. A real AMERICAN lays them all off, sells the assets piece by piece, takes their pensions, files for bankruptcy and then reorganizes and is hailed as a brilliant businessman, not give the damn store to his blue collar, non motivated employees. What a loser, doesent he know the new normal?

He's a throwback to the old days. Reminds me of the machine shop guy who didn't take a salary during the recession of the early nineties in Detroit so he could pay his people.

Not anymore.

What a breath of fresh air, a guy who isn't a complete a55hole. Could use a few guys like him in my field.

Lots and lots of people do. Without government coersion. And without fanfare.

Did this man not deserve notoriety for providing jobs for these 400 employees prior to his act of charity?

Or for providing services for the two communities?

Would folks on this board have thought less of him had he given his life's work to his children (or other family members)?

Oh God, give me a break. No one here is asking for all business owners to just give their business to employees. We are (along with others) just asking for some decent human beings in this world who do good things for others instead of shutting down business or laying people off in political stunts because The Socialist ™ was re-elected.

I misunderstood.

I thought it was his act of charity that people were admiring, and that newscasters thought important to share.

I didn't realize that he was getting attention simply becasue "he didn't shut his business down or lay people off as a political stunt".

I guess I missed out on the evil corporation thing.

Back when I was in the private sector, the owner of our company would bring the accountant into the conference room. He'd go over the books with us on the overhead (hid nothing that I could see). After going over the books and showing what profit the brothers took out, he showed us what was left over. He then divided that amount between the account managers and the field reps and handed us a check.

We also had a warehouse full premiums to give to customers (TVs, VCRs, video cameras etc). At Xmas he let us go in the warehouse and pick out one of anything we wanted.

My mom died 5 years after I left the company. The owner and the president of the company showed up at her funeral. I don't even know how they were aware of it.

They paid for all of my Masters classes, knowing full well what I was taking had nothing to do with the field we were in (they were education classes).

The year my mom died my brother took off a ton of time from Kelloggs. They never questioned it.

When I was in college I worked for a Grand Rapids grocery chain. The owner also owned a car dealership. He helped pay for my college, gave out small bonuses at Christmas, instituted a profit sharing program, and attended the college graduations of many of my co-workers.

To be honest with you, if I didn't have personal relationship with our superintendent and my principal I'd feel more like a number in the public sector than I ever did in the private sector.
