I doubt my situations were all that unique. My son takes his staff to Chicago every year and pays for everything. His accountant has told him to let two people go and change his office hours to M-TH (pretty common in the dental field these days), but he won't do it.

Honestly, I don't get your out and out hatred of the corporate world. If it sucks so bad why do you continue to stay in it? I can't believe in 25 years in the private sector you never had one employer who treated you or his subordinates well.

As a union employee and someone who has negotiated contracts, I see a true US AGAINST THEM mentality. I never saw that in the private sector.

Speaking strictly for me, I love the corporate world, if there's no corporate world, there's no world. As Stephen Covey once said: "no margin, no mission." If the corporate world does not make money, there's no USA.

I agree with you, there are inept educational leaders who can be just as hard hearted any corporate leader you will find. Kindness or cruelty are not restricted to any particular field of endeavor.

I don't get why everyone thinks governments are so bad these days, I'm seeing large corporations who rule their space act just as inneficient and inept as governments, no difference. I think governments are more efficient in some areas, honestly.

Oh Dan, it's not always that bad, really. I just highlight the unfairness and one sided examples for you and this board. If you would like, I'll start posting feel good stories that will make yours look like AmityVille Horror. 03-melodramatic

I'm not sure anyone here would disagree with your last point.

Without government intervention or favors, those corporations usually don't last long.

The difference is that corporations cannot legally use coercion.

They aren't able to "make you an offer that you can't refuse". :)

Well, I've worked for and with corporations who are so reliant on government intervention and favors that it's hard to distinguish the two. Power companies for one, Oil and Gas being another, REITS for sure rely on tax laws to exist and thrive.

What I found ironic is that they all complained about the government being in their lives.

Dip, I thought this was the opportunity for you to finally admit that you don't even have a "cold" heart.

Ok DB; now lets hear the stories.

Have we decided if the owner is a registered Democrat or Republican yet?

Patience I need quiet and a keyboard. I'd cry the way you did, like a little girl if I start writing those stories in front of people. I'm sure you understand Dip. Right?!

RE: Owner gives away store
Well pull up a chair kids. The fire is really going, and no MHB, I won't get in trouble because I live in Centennial and we don't get in trouble for anything because we don't believe in that bad ol government interfering with our lives here. I don't pull permits unless I want insurance involved! You should move here.

So story number one of my MANY wonderful corporate America experiences. Can you say experience? Sure, thought you could. It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood, wonderful day in the neighborhood......can you be mine, can you be my, neighbor.

While working for a major national defense contractor in their aircraft maintenance division, they hired me right out of graduate school, a co-worker of ours who was an A&P came down with an allergic reaction due to residue in fuel tanks which he had been a "tank rat" in hundreds of times before that. (nasty job). He was taken away by a medivac type helicopter from the front of our hangar near the airport tarmac.

He got sick quick, was rushed to the hospital, and after a long time being touch and go, made it, we're talking three months of being in the hospital, flyers every morning distributed around our hangar with his condition, all that we talked and worried about was this man and his family and gave our thoughts in every meeting. We were a family then, and a strong one.

During that period, our HR department undertook a voluntary program to have payroll deductions for he and his family go into effect to cover the difference in his short term and long term disability. The participation rate was off the charts, more than covered his gap in disability, he ended up being even better off and the extra money was setup in an account for his kids college.

What I found with a few easy queries by some nosy IT guy, is that our principles back in DC for DynCorp were the largest contributors, to the point where it was much past them "being charitable". I was touched by their generosity and personal interest. They came out and visited, made personal visits and made sure that everyone knew if he needed anything, they were there. Also, they led a initiative and changed our safety rules to be BETTER than the existing work place laws at the time. We were trend setters.

That was an example of the good of corporate America that I saw first hand. That man that had the near death experience was re-trained and became an IT professional and is working in his field still today, thriving and his daughter went on to graduate from the University of Arizona down in Tucson. The money set aside came in handy because she was of age to go to college right when the economy took a downward dump in 2007. Otherwise she wasn't going to be able to go. Her dad and she are both doing great now. I'm happy to have been a part of both their lives and be able to witness their big life changes.

That's one of many.

RE: Owner gives away store
Or maybe they were just trying to avoid a lawsuit.

Can I share another touching story.

Many people in our district never call in sick. I for example had nearly a 100 banked sick days, which I am using as we speak.

A friend of mine, a former Navy Seal, contracted stomach cancer. He eventually died. He was a middle school teacher. In the past the superintendent had allowed people to donate sick days to those with long term illnesses. The superintendent at the time put a stop to it, making his final days just that more difficult.

While in the private sector I didn't miss a single little league game. As my boss always said, "You're family comes first." I did however miss numerous away baseball and basketball games when my kids were in high school. The district simply couldn't allow you to miss their redundant, often pointless meetings. "They're mandatory, you've got to be there!!!" The ironic thing was that they often had nothing of substance prepared, so they'd strong arm a couple of teachers into doing a presentation to kill their 50 minutes.

These are all great stories Dip. We could go on for days, and I'm sure you might and that's great if you do partner! 03-thumbsup

However, I would be remiss if I didn't point out that individual behaviors in corporations do not equal the points of how corporations as an entity conduct themselves, and I guess that's where I failed to explain very well my issues. You see Dip, they are not one in the same. I apologize if I wasn't clear to you. I can see where that might get missed.

I'm sure this might get misinterpreted as well, but at least I made the attempt to explain my position. Please feel free to ask if you need more clarification, I'll give it my best shot!

Some would reject the underlying premise that the issue to be considered is....."who does it more efficiently".

A different paradigm
