With half the current C*USA moving off to form a new conference, it is quite possible that the rest of C*USA (ECU, Tulsa, UTEP, USM, Marshall) heads somewhere else and we're left with with FCS promotions, brand new teams, and Sun Belt teams (my condolences to La Tech).

Do you think this is gonna help our program being in what is going to be the worst football conference? Can we gain traction in with a patsy home schedule?

The Chicago Maroons have a Heisman Trophy, two national championships (real ones, not UAT ones) and seven Big Ten championships in their trophy case. If they can fade away, so can all of these pissant programs.

I don't know where you're getting your info, but look again at that list of schools. Whatever is formed from leftover BE all-sports schools, CUSA, MWC, etc. UAB is a key piece on the Eastern side if only due to basketball...those are likely tourney units no group will pass up. There's also no reason to build a conference with a huge hole over Birmingham, AL.

UAB has some positives like its central location, strong academics, and basketball history. Birmingham/Central Alabama is also a great market for college football. However, eight straight losing seasons and seven years away from our last NCAA tournament win has pushed UAB towards irrelevance. Dozens of articles written on conference expansion/realignment and we are never mentioned. If the Big East does dissolve and the football playing leftovers combine with CUSA East, I'm not that confident UAB will be included. We sure haven't been helping ourselves on the field or the court.

I hope I'm reading the situation completely wrong. After the last couple of weeks I need to be encouraged so please correct me.

One conference has bowl tie ins, any new conference would not

One conference has an automatic bid in basketball, a new one would not.

One conference doesn't have to travel all over the country to play in all sports, one that still exists at this point, does.

Until UAB starts cutting me a revenue sharing check, like people in Alaska get for oil royalties, TV deals and such will remain irrelevant to me.

I'm going by all the talk on the Big East board, which seems confident that UConn, Louisville, and Cincinnati are going to the ACC (either to get to 16, or replace teams going to the Big 10+6). If that is true, and considering past trends it makes sense, that would leave only USF left in the Big East as a football school. We already know that Houston, SMU, Memphis, and UCF are leaving for the "Big East" (if it still exists, not sure if Temple, Navy, San Diego St, and Boise St will continue to follow), and if that happens expect more C*USA defections either to the "Big East" or MWC (depending on what Boise St and San Diego St decide to do).

Do the math, look at who will be left in this conference when this is over, consider the implications for football and basketball, recognize that we're not getting the benefit of the "Birmingham Market" when it comes to expansion. It might be too early to know for sure who we are left with, but for the sake of message board speculation, is this a good spot for us, or do we need to come up with another conference membership strategy?

An educated guestimate, this could very easily be our conference next year as a result of very reasonable defections of UTEP (MWC), Tulsa, ECU, and USM ("Big East"):
UAB - La Tech - Tulane - Rice - UNT - FIU - UTSA - ODU - Charlotte - Marshall.
There could be more defections (MAC? Sun Belt?).

Is this a good conference for us, or should we consider going to the Missouri Valley? Sun Belt?

Then again the remainder of the Big East football could end up as the Eastern side of the Alliance. Remember they will have no power and nothing to bargain with.

Now since this thread is up here Jon Soloman will troll by and we will have a nice fat article about UAB going to the Sun belt. Everyone flip off, I mean wave to Jon Soloman! :domokun:

What isn't mentioned is that the non-football playing schools in the Big East have enough votes to kick out everyone else. They have been forced to take all of these ridiculous schools that are football playing schools, but suck like crap basketball schools.

They have had enough.

No only a message board full of delusional people with an over-inflated feeling of superiority that the name of "Big East" automatically makes their conference a destination of choice, no matter how much the numbers show every thing is evening out. The only thing moving to whatever the Big East becomes gets you...much larger travel expenses.

Some day all the non bcs teams will be part of a big super conference with multiple divisions in relation of the location (aka to save money)

All those teams will get one and only one chance of compete again the 7 or 15 spots allocate to the bcs teams .
Right now most of thoses non bcs teams dont even have a chance
