Smart move by the ACC, as it cushions against FSU and Clemson leaving to the SEC, and cuts off further Big XII expansion while also killing their main competition, the Big East.

Nothing says "Atlantic Coast" like Louisville, KY

UCONN to ACC makes sense. not sure about Louisvile and Cinn. What does the SEC gain with Clemson and FSU? They are already in those markets. Why split $$$ with them?

RE: Big East to Dissolve?
Fox Sports Radio last night mentioned that the ACC is next in line to get torn to pieces. Maryland leaving them has really shaken the conference up. He said that the SEC wanted Virginia Tech and one other. The Big Ten wanted UNC and Virginia, and the Big XII wanted Florida State and Clemson. Boston College is begging the Big Ten to take them.

From where the reports are right now I'd give the odds as the following:

ACC adds Louisville, Cincinnati, UConn (75%)
B1G adds Virginia, North Carolina (50%)
SEC adds Virginia Tech, NC State (50%)
B12 adds Florida State, Clemson (25%)

I put the odds of FSU & Clemson to the B12 fairly low at this point because if the ACC takes Louisville off the table it has effectively blocked the B12 from further eastern expansion. FSU and Clemson are going to sit around until the SEC makes their move to see if they can be part of it.

I'm not sure if UVa, VaTech and UNC are that interested in leaving the ACC where they have a good travel situation. Especially if the ACC makes a quick move to go to 16 in football (UL, UC, UConn) and 20 in basketball (GTown, Nova, St. John's). That would make for an awesome hoops league which I think would be worth sticking around for.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next big power move was some unexpected combination from the above like North Carolina State and Florida State to the SEC. Both schools would jump quickly for the SEC.

If even one of the NC/Virginia schools leave, the rest will jump ship as fast as they can in a domino effect.

I don't think they will care if NC State goes to the SEC. That doesn't hurt the ACC very much at all.

SEC (adds NC State, FSU)
B1G (adds UVA, GT)

Something like that is also possible. I still couldn't see Clemson and VT jumping for the B12 in that scenario.

I: Miami, Clemson, UNC, Wake Forest, Duke, Virginia Tech
II: Louisville, Cincinnati, PITT, Syracuse, BC, Connecticut

Those are nice football divisions from a rivalry standpoint. The ACC would remain a contract conference so what would be to gain by heading to the B12?

RE: Big East to Dissolve?
Quote:ACC presidents could vote on a Maryland replacement as early as this week, but two league sources believe an expansion to 16 is unlikely at this time.

UConn and Louisville are the favorites for the league's future 14th team. Maryland's defection to the Big Ten leaves the ACC with 13 entering the 2013 season. The league feels well-prepared for realignment talk after dealing with the additions of Pitt and Syracuse just 14 months ago, according to a source.

The ACC's 4-4-4 committee -- composed of presidents, athletic directors and faculty reps -- has been in the process of gathering information for the presidents. To add a school, ACC presidents would need a three-fourths-majority vote.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball...per-source

It looks like the ACC is only planning to take 1 school, leaving 4-5 other schools on deck for expansion.

The Big East though by losing 1 more school will only have 10 schools in place for the 2014 football season. They will thus need to expand with 2.

I wonder if there will be a compromise to keep the league together whereby a few more basketball only schools get into the league like Butler and Xavier as a concession by the football schools. Could it make sense to pull that coast to coast catholic school league directly into the BE with Gonzaga, Denver and Creighton joining the Big East...

Coast-to-Coast BE

I: SDSU, SJSU, Gonzaga, Seattle, Portland, Boise, Denver, Creighton, Tulsa, SMU, Houston, Memphis
II: DePaul, Marquette, Cincinnati, Temple, Villanova, Georgetown, UConn, St. John's, Seton Hall, Providence, USF, UCF

CtoC FB:

I: SDSU, SJSU, Boise, BYU, Tulsa, SMU, Houston
II: Memphis, Cincinnati, Temple, Navy, UConn, USF, UCF

Could something crazy like this be the answer to saving the Big East?

The Catholic basketball programs are not leaving the Big East considering that they represent 5/8 of the founding membership. If anything, they would kick out the football schools, who can then form their own remixed MWCUSA hodgepodge. Temple can stay, along with UMass joining, as both can play football-only in the MAC as originally planned. Otherwise the football schools better consider the needs of the basketball schools in all of this mess too.

I've wondered the same. The Big East doesn't dissolve, it becomes an "all except football" conference and tells its remaining football members to figure it out.

03-yes

Which leads to the original CUSA act two, but actually a respectable conference:
Cincy, L'ville, UConn, UCF, USF, Navy, Temple...
add ECU and UMass, and it's set.

Since it looks like UConn will be off to the ACC, and Louisville off to either the ACC or Big 12, I think Temple and UMass might be more inclined to play hoops with the Big East Catholic schools and football-only in the MAC. Navy could also back out and remain independent or, longshot, join the ACC in football-only since most of the teams they wanted to play in the Big East are bailing out. ECU is a favorite of this website, but maybe not presidents.

I think the key for the Big East is to avoid losing Cincy. They can then go with a football approach of paired rivals in specific target areas. Two in the East (UMass \ Temple), two in Florida (USF \ UCF), two in the Midlands (Cincy \ Memphis), two in Texas (Houston \ SMU), two in the Mountains (Boise \ BYU), and two in California (Fresno \ SDSU). Basketball reverts to 16 teams with an even 8-8 split by adding St. Louis or maybe Richmond.

Maybe. I can see the MAC going for that, but I think it would suck.

14 is too many. But better than 13.

Temple and UMass as independents, along w/ nearby Army and Navy, would do fine by themselves. Having them in the MAC brings nothing to the conference.

I don't think Temple would be ok as an Indy, let alone UMass. Temple might have a slightly higher chance but it's still pretty close to zero.

As I understand it Indy programs have literally *no* access to big bowls in the new playoff system (correct me if I am wrong). Just the Big four and then the best of the other five. Notre Dame has of course carved itself out an exception. Schools like BYU, Army and Navy need to figure out what they are going to do.

In terms of scheduling? Temple could not manage a 12th game this season! Give them a little pass because of the short notice but honestly it's not easy to cobble together a schedule. Heck Idaho is doing a home and home with New Mexico and BYU is still one game short for next season.

Logistically its a lot harder to get football games set up than it is hoops games.

That's not to say I want Temple back football only. At this point *IF* the Big east drops football the MAC has more leverage than ever on what ever teams are left out in the cold.

I'm content with 13-14 members so if CDOA wants to snatch up some FBall only members more power to them..

Little harder out west w/ the travel involved, but that still speaks of a poor AD IMO.

I figure a UMass schedule should look like this, year after year for at least a decade:

URI/Maine/UNH/Stony Brook (H-100%)
Penn St/Pitt
UConn/BC (H-50%)
UVa (H-33%)
Kentucky/Indiana/Purdue/Vandy (H- 33%)
Syracuse (H-33%)
MAC-E (H- 50%)
Army (H-50%)
Navy (H- 50%)
ECU/Marshall (H-50%)
Temple (H- 50%)
SBC (H-50%)

Might have a tough time getting Indiana or Kentucky to do even a 2-for-1, but could put another MAC-E team in there instead. And if they get real chippy, they could get games against BYU or Hawaii.
