UAB men's athletics needs to learn something ASAP
Football and basketball are in desperate need of a killer attitude. Intensely prepare for every opponent regardless of their record or presumed talent (or lack thereof) and never let your foot off the gas.

Basketball lost to Navy in the second half.

Football lost to Memphis before ever stepping on the field.

Check your head and check your heart... check your old, preconceived attitude at the door. Become winners.

We were up 20 on Navy at the half and we won by 19. I'll give them a break for "losing" the 2nd half.

Football needs to just win. Period. Letting their foot off the gas is not an option unless we play SELA.

I think both programs are headed in the right direction. Again, we all knew 2012 shaped up to be a BAD football season. Well, we were right all along. 2013 promises to be better. 2014 could be the best in a LONG time, maybe ever. We just need to keep supporting the team to help them get there. This basketball season should be decent. Next season promises to be better. So, we need to keep supporting the team to help them get there as well.

I agree with your point but will say it's hard to have keep the "killer attitude" when your own fans don't support you. I was not at the football game (work gets in the way) but talked with a couple UAB folks who said the crowd sucked. I was at the basketball game and the crowd did suck (less than half of the "official attendance").

Even the students (who have shown impressive support in the first 2 games) didn't show up for this one. Not sure why, maybe the upcoming holiday had something to do with it.

I really believe that the crowd can have a big effect on college athletes, especially in basketball. And this team (whether good or bad) is fun to watch. I just wish more Blazer fans would come down to Bartow.

I don't know if I agree with half the listed attendance. At least give credit for what we do draw. I was actually there. That said point taken. Agree with Slant.

This loser mentality and lack of killer instinct needs to be purged from both teams and both coaches have their work cut out for them.

The crowds are awful for the basketball games, it will be worse Tuesday when we play PV. Our student section is embarrasing and for them most part its very quiet most of the game. This goes for half the season ticket holders as well, that don't deserve their tickets for 15 games they never show up, but for that one Memphis game.

Crowds are always bad before Thanksgiving and we haven played anyone to get the average fan excited. NFL or cupcakes at Bartow? What do you think anyone but the diehards will pick. We are coming off a losing season and a coach no one liked. It will take time. The average fan in Birmingham dies even realize basketball exists until after football season is over.

I wish every home basketball and football games were sold out, but in my opinion the attendance at a 3 pm Sunday Basketball game against Navy... well, except for the student section ( you have to wonder what they are doing ) and those out of town, etc... there are no excuses for UAB fans to not come and support your teams.
It has to start with us, if we come and make it the place to be, and the product is good, then like minded people will want to be where the happening is going on.

I agree. It's a Sunday game which is a tough draw. Also tough when you're conflicting with football season, it will get better.

UAB athletics is still in its infancy compared to most of our competition and our fanbase and active alumni base is incredibly small compared to our conference mates... this is why winning is so important... we have less sold-out, diehard fans and alumni to draw upon.

I can still remember sitting in the student section with the four other students in attendance during the last couple seasons of Murry Bartow's tenure... it took Mike Anderson until season #2 before consistent winning made a difference in attendance, especially in the student section.

Slant, I agree. I was going to say, the November and December games actually seem better then they were in the mid-late 90s. I came on my official visit for football in December 1994 and almost NO ONE was at the basketball game I went to. But I saw Carlos Williams show out! The whole time I was a student in the 90s, those games were poorly attended, even by the students. Today's students are WAY better.

overall, i agree. however, lumping "losing the 2nd half" with what happened against memphis is ridiculous.

oh how i miss the days of XCMA when every game in Bartow was a packed house
(for those wondering, thats sarcasm, i just figured i'd beat somebody else to the punch)

Bartow Arena is too big for UAB basketball. There, I stated it once again.

It won't be when we are back in a conference with Louisville, Cincy, Memphis, USF, UCF, Houston, SMU, and some of our current conference mates.

I wish that would happen, but just don't see it. BE will take the best of our conference and we'll be stuck with MTSU and FAU

And we play fun to watch ball, and win.

To go back to your original post, Slant, I think that is exactly the point that Coach Haase was so unsatisfied about yesterday. He knows what it takes, and that's what he wants to see, consistently.

I wonder how many universities have a student body that supports other universities over the one they attend? Until that changes, there won't be much student participation at UAB.

I am terrified that the basketball team will sleepwalk into Troy's shiny, new arena and get waxed like Mi$$ St. Maestri's teams live and die by the three and UAB is terrible at guarding shooters behind the arc right now... thankfully our opponents miss more than they make because we give them a lot of wide-open shots.

Who is the best expansion option left in C-USA?

We're in the best market. We have the best basketball history. Maybe they would consider Marshall. ECU and USM offer small markets and good football historically, but will they be more attractive than us? The Big East could be looking for multiple schools anyway, so we could all get in.
