One of the top 5 football programs in history with 50 straight years of home sellouts and a top academic school located directly within the DC metro region? What the heck are your expansion standards unless you consider anyone other than Notre Dame or Texas as a failed expansion?
Maryland can absolutely deliver the DC/Baltimore region for the Big Ten Network. There is no doubt in my mind about that and this fact alone will net the conference a ton of money. The question is more about whether Rutgers (or more appropriately, the combo of Rutgers, Penn State, Maryland and Michigan) can do the same in the NY/NJ region. This is where the real risk for the Big Ten as opposed to Maryland.
This is all about the Big 10 Network, which is a cash cow. Now they add Baltimore/DC and NYC. We have been pumping TV's on here for our new TV contract, and the Big 10 just took a chunk. They aren't regreeting anything about these moves.

It's awful early to judge, but the SEC is looking like geniuses on the Texas A&M add; not so much on the Mizzou add.
Historically, Mizzou has had problems keeping their top high school players in-state. Nebraska recruited there, like it was an in-state school. And attracted fans as if it was the local school. T-shirt fans = TV eyeballs.

The SEC had to bring in another school to keep the league even since they were bringing on A&M. Just b/c Mizzou isn't performing well in the conference this year does not mean they were a bad choice or will not perform well in the future. Plus they also have a strong B-Ball team which adds strength to the league.
They didn't want another team in florida, or in South Carolina. So FSU and Clemson was out. Who else would you suggest the SEC had brought in outside of A&M? The sooners aren't coming without OSU. K-State is not coming without Kansas. You just added A&M, so why add another Texas school. They went and got the market that surrounds Mizzou. Was a very strategic and logical pick I believe.

So basically, the Big 10 has added Nebraska(Omaha, some KC), Maryland(DC and Balt), Rutgers(NYC...I almost got through that without laughing) and the SEC has brought in Mizzou(KC and StL) and the Aggies(the entire state of Texas). I'd say the SEC has won so far.

Can't believe I'm not even going to get a single short drive to see the Tigers play UConn, though. And that's probably the BEST scenario I can hope for.

I was talking about Rutgers. UCONN would be a true loss.

To add, B1G can only add AAU schools so their choices are very narrow, and they want to have the states touching each other at least so only other options were Kansas (GoR/B12) and Mizzou (Isn't coming unless Kansas joins). The next and only choices were Maryland (Gives Penn State a close "rival" and boosts B1G Network) and Rutgers (Which by no means is a bad add). Money had a lot to do with it but it wasn't everything.
