I didn't want to hijack a different thread about this, but why do some (not all) Troy fans put their team name in ALL CAPS when referring to themselves? TROY is not an abbreviation for anything. It's Troy. Using TROY makes you seem incredibly pretentious. Or should I say even more pretentious? If you want to use TROY then I think we here at Sun Belt bbs should give meaning to that acronym you're using. Is there a legitimate reason for using "TROY" as opposed to "Troy" other than trying to assert superiority over other league schools? That's the only reason I can come up for why some Troy fans are using it.

That is the official branding, to my knowledge. I don't always spell it out in all caps, but when I do, it's not meant as any kind of superiority. However, you'll never hear me (and I've never heard any other Troy fan) make a big deal out of it. Forcing you to call us TROY would be pretentious. Heck, you can call us Troy State if you'd like - most of us are proud of what we used to be.

Most Troy Apparel will have Troy spelt out on the clothing as TROY...

Most athletic apparel I've seen uses caps for every thing.

Same reasons the cajuns say Louisiana. It's the athletic branding. Troy is the school. TROY refers to the athletics.

I agree with your point, it annoys me when bama fans say BAMA but that is the reasoning and truthfully, they can call themselves whatever.

Actually when you go through orientation at TROY they tell you when you refer to the school it is TROY and when you refer to the town its Troy. One of the things I actually remember from that class.

No. It was a legitimate question. A lot of Troy fans I interact with have a superiority complex because of their previous run in football. TROY in caps to an outsider appears as if Troy fans are acting superior, much like how Ohio State fans use "The" Ohio State University. The word "the" is unnecessary, but it's something that makes them feel superior to other institutions. I didn't know this is how Troy was trying to market their team. I've not really seen it that way much at all except on message boards.

According to Troy's website, you would use TROY to indicate the campuses worldwide, not athletic branding.

Troy University should not be referred to as Troy University System since we are one university.

The words “Troy University” should usually be used with upper and lower case, not in all caps, and Troy University means all campuses worldwide.

The word “TROY” by itself is always capitalized and means all campuses worldwide. The word “Troy” would mean the City of Troy, Alabama.

Do not ever use the following initials for Alabama campuses: TUM, TUD, TUPC.

NEVER, EVER, use the initials TU for Troy University, but instead use TROY.

Actually the "the" in front of Ohio State is needed. Going of memory but I think it has something to do with Ohio University.

And to the OP probably because we see TROY so much it grows on us. Heck, the bag next to me right now says TROY

The city of Troy is Troy and the university is TROY. That's how the administration differentiates the two. I use both Troy and TROY, depends on the situation.
