I was wondering about this too. I suppose O'Field could go the Prop 48 route, which is what Pigram did. He would have to foot the bill his first year (with out-of-state tuition) and Murry would have to be willing to hold onto a scholarship for him. He could also go the prep school or juco route. Again, it's hard to predict a year from now and very difficult to predict two years from now.
I think this is a significant loss for us. O'Field appeared to be the type of recruit that mid-major programs mine the country for: kids with high ceilings, but also with glaring weaknesses that cause major programs to look elsewhere. With O'Field's big-time athleticism, I think he could've been the proverbial diamond in the rough.
Spot on! Big schools saw his athleticism and upside but had to back off cause of academic concerns which is sometimes a gain for mid-majors like ETSU.
I think the reasons big school shy away from the O'Field's of the world has more to do with athletic skills than academic ones, depending on the institution of course.
It looks like Isaac Banks--a 6'7" forward from Louisiana--will become the 13th scholarship player for the upcoming season. I originally posted in the recruiting thread that Banks was a 2014 commitment. Banks appears to be a solid pickup. He's a high school kid who has gone under the radar, and we need post players for the 2014-15 season. I've cross-posted information on Banks from the recruiting thread:
NOLA Hoops:
"Isaac is a long athletic forward who can handle the ball. Did not play travel ball and will be a steal for a division one college"

Looks like another "project" type that Murry will run off after 1 year.
I heard that O'Field did not go to Midland Jr College that he is enrolled at ETSU as a Prop 48 student. This means that if he can get his academics in order in year one then he can be put on scholarship for years 2-4 with the possibility of one more year. If this is the case I think we should sign a JC big man and an HS big man after this year.

Wow! Can you confirm this? If true, this is great news!

Terrific! In my untrained eye, I think he's a diamond in the rough, the kind of recruit mid-major coaches scour the country for. He has Justin Tubbs-athleticism on a taller frame.
What are the restictions of a prop-48? Can he participate in official practices? Pigram was our last (and only?) prop-48, and I don't ever remember seeing him until his freshman season.

Some badly needed good news for Buc basketball. Don't know about his skill set, but he has phenomenal athleticism. He was a national slam dunk competitor for a reason - his leaping ability makes the very athletic Lester Wilson look almost earth bound.

That is correct, and if he doesn't meet academic requirements this year, then he'll be gone.
I'm told from a very reliable source that Maurice is great kid who has been through some difficult circumstances. As a result, his academics in high school were not a priority, but not out of neglect. This first year is on his own dime (out-of-state no less), so he's got a lot at stake.
I don't know if coming to ETSU as a prop-48 was always on the table--he reportedly committed to Midland College (juco) in the summer--but I commend his decision to make come to ETSU with no guarantee of ever landing on the team.
