Judy Nichols

Judy is and has been Administrative Assistant in the UAB Basketball office since 1978. She also happens to be the only person who has been with the UAB Athletic Department for the entire thirty five years that UAB Athletics has existed. Judy has been there every day for UAB Basketball, bar none, and has also probably attended every UAB home game over the last thirty five years. I can't think of another person who is more deserving of such an honor as to be inducted into UABs Hall of Fame.

He first appears in the 85-86 media guide as a student manager, but I think he goes back further.

I haven't heard of anything.

Not mentioned, from what I can tell, by 33/40 or al.com.

I went to HS with Victor. I'm pretty sure he came to UAB in the fall of 1982 and was a manager as a freshman. And yes, he looked exactly the way he does now when he was 14.

Victor began attending UAB practices during the 1982-83 season, when Mitchell and Mincy, etc., the Memphis Connection, were freshmen.

Who was a better player, Mitchell or Mincy?

Who was/is a better ambassador or brings more positive attention for UAB, Bryan Thomas or Roddy White?

Both were exceptionally good at their positions.

Mincy was very effective at the low post and was proficient using the glass down low. He was a good rebounder, good at boxing out. He also could shoot fairly well from ten to fifteen feet.

Mitchell was much more diversified. He became an excellent ball handler and his is outside shooting, off of the dribble, and off of the pass, improved so much over the years as did his range. By his senior year, he was canning shots from near thirty feet. He was also very fast driving down court and driving to the basket. Steve was the go to guy in the clutch and had the green light to shoot at will. I remember one game against Villanova(I think), they went four overtimes and Steve carried them all the way, including making the winning shot at the buzzer from about thirty five feet on an inbounds pass with 2.6 seconds remaining. He took one dribble, swished it, and was swamped on the floor by the student section. I would say that Mitchell was the better player, overall.

RE: Greatest Ever at UAB
Coming out of high school, Mincy was the greater recruiting prizes. He is perhaps the only player we have ever recruited in Memphis that the Tigers truly wanted. They didn't go after Mitchell, because they had already signed a local point guard, Andre Turner.

In college, Mitchell was the star of the team and received many national accolades. Vitale, before he was so annoying called Mitchell the most underrated player in the country and was constantly promoting him.

But, Mitchell and Mincy worked best together. Probably the best tandem at UAB ever.

After UAB, Mincy has had the greater career. He became a superstar and beloved player in Puerto Rico and played many years in leagues and on Olympic teams. He also became something of a celebrity, I think because he married a famous Puerto Rican model. Mitchell played some overseas, but has spent many years with the UAB program in various different positions. A great ambassador.

They both deserve to be in uAB's HOF, but I would say Mitchell before Mincy.

Big D drives the truck that carries the Hall of Fame. He has no need to enter. He is ATLAS upon which the whole thing is balanced.

He met Chuck Norris once. That's when ole Chuck grew the whiskers and started looking old. The sight of such prowess aged Chucky and made him slow and vulnerable.

"Pipo" was also a celebrity basketball player in Puerto Rico. He lives in central Florida and I spoke with Pipo on the phone several times last year. Pipo gave me Raymond Gause phone number in Puerto Rico and I spoke with Raymond several times, as well. Raymond told me that Jerome has his own business, is doing very well, and lives in a very nice home on the beach.
