I am not a PhD, but the experience I've been told (I have masters and inquired) was that it takes 4-5 years of being whoever is above you's ***** and teaching lower level classes for very little pay.

Isn't that if the school is funding the PhD? Granted some programs i.e. physics have you do lots of research and the prof gets all the credit. But say ODU's PHD or DEng of Engineering Management / Systems Engineering. I don't recall hearing any of their students being a professors *****, UNLESS they were earning the degree on the schools dime.

Damn. I guess it depends on the program then.
I was just in the Eng Sys building the other day asking about the D. Eng program. I'll ask about this specifically next time I talk to my advisor.
