Also announced during Broderick's state of the university address, the new residence hall will be named for Hugo Owens.

You can read or watch the full address here;

Considering the state holds us back in terms of funding and support, and we don't have a law school or medical school to pump out wealthy graduates, ODU should be proud of its endowment. It just needs to continue to improve. Hopefully investing $160 million in infrastructure, research, scholarships and faculty will help get more top academically gifted students to ODU. They graduate and have successful careers, earn tons of money and give back. Its a cycle. Maybe this campaign can help supercharge our growth and reputation again and get us back in line with the GMUs and JMUs in terms of academic reputation. If that happens, in another 100 years maybe we do kick off a $1Billion dollar campaign.

Here is how UTSA did. I loved their "Tier One" campaign, and would love to see ODU do something similar. ODUs capital campaign is even more aspirational than UTSAs was, and I expect ODU to meet its goal. You don't generally launch these things publicly until you have 60-70% or more of the money raised already.

+1

UTSA profiles very similarly with an urban footprint. While they have some impressive higher ed private institutions in town, they have done a great job building and selling a brand that used to have commuter school written all over it.

Weren't some of y'all criticizing our lobbying efforts in Richmond last week, in comparison to CNU?

Quote:Since 2012, ODU received $28 million in new operational funds, by far the most of any institution. To help put that in perspective: We would need to raise $450 million from private sources to provide that level of funding from endowment allocations.

Cashout is 443 million.... your generous!

Wife and I have talked about what we'd do with the money should we win. We'd both get a nice chunk each to play with, have a joint pile invested so we can live off the interest, and donate a bunch to Norfolk Public Schools, ODU, Some pet projects in Norfolk, and do similar stuff in our respective home towns.

If wife and I get 5 mill each to do what we want (give to family, cars, etc...) keep 50 mil set aside for our joint living stuff. That is still a HUGE amount of money to toss to the community.

Wow that's more than I thought.

No Webb replacement? Thought the Webb replacement was tied to the Chem replacement?

That is a lot of money. I still have it in my mind that the school wants the master plan done my 2035, roughly 20 year timeline. I've never read that anywhere, but just judging at the rate of construction I can see it happen.

Gonna need well over an additional $1 Billion though to finish everything I think.

Exactly.

That's nearly 28K per person donating. ODU needs to churn out more graduates into the $Million+ club if they want to pull in those kind of donations.

Pres. Broderick said the following during the address;

"Soon, I will be asking many of you to "pardon our dust" in Webb Center as we create more space for students from different races, ethnicities, abilities, sexual orientations, gender identities and cultures to gather with one another, as well as the broader community. We also will provide more room for student clubs in Webb, as well as create a gathering space for veterans and other military-affiliated students in the old Education Building."

Sounds like renovations to Webb will begin very soon.

Quite impressive. I'm glad to see the launch of this capital campaign too. Also glad to see the expansion of health related programs, but bummed to see them based at the VB extension. .....

@37:25 it sounds like Graduate programs. If that is the case, no need to go to the main campus.

Hearing that, I wonder if the Health Science buildings on the Master Plan (Slide 26) Are being moved to the VB Campus. (Link to Master Plan)

Additional support for that thought, it sounds like the old education building is staying? Since they are building out spaces for special groups. I was also at a meeting with the Dean of Engineering earlier this year. She said that she has plans to get a huge maker space built in there as well. She wants some serious capability on hand.

Then again, the child study center is getting a new location. So the projected expansion at the current site is probably not going to happen. Might be cheaper / wiser to demolish that site and place the health science building(s) there.

So, I wonder what, if anything this means with an EVMS merger in the future? If the undergrad health sciences are not expanding on campus, perhaps the EVMS campus would fulfill that role, and all tangential health related but not medical degrees would be in VB.

The new Chem building is supposed to be on land currently being used by the Webb.

I wonder if that means the Webb stays and will not get torn down? Multi-floor expansion coming?

Perhaps this is a bridge measure to expand Webb's usefullness until they have the funds necessary to complete both projects. Moseley Architects and WTW architects were the two companies mace and crown reported were doing the design. I can look later and see if they have the plans posted on their websites.

ODU Master Plan
That's disappointing if they are doing a remodel to Webb. They need to tear down the whole thing and start over. It takes up too much space on campus and is very inefficient for ODU

True. I thought the new Webb Center was a done deal. Renovations at this point is putting a second coat of lipstick on that pig. So much for our nice new statement building. Hopefully this is not true and the new Webb is still in the works. I think the clock tower is tied to the construction of the new Webb as well.

RE: ODU Master Plan
There very well could be a new Webb in the works and they are simply doing something short term for the students.
Perhaps it's an inexpensive way to measure how much demand there actually is for all the special requests that students made for the new building? If the students want a space for activity x but don't actually use it, then in a new building simply don't plan for it. If however there is more demand for that activity plan something bigger.

Actually I think the new Chem building is being built near the baseball field across from the oceanography building. I remember reading this a little awhile ago somewhere on Moseley Architects Facebook page. I will have to find it again.

Just looked on their website and it's not there. Didn't see it on their Facebook either. Only went back 6 months though.

I understand that the '13 Master plan is pretty much useless now. I wonder if they have a new one sketched up or if they are simply shooting from the hip.

To me it would make sense for them to have a new 5 year plan every 5 years. Crazy concept! So I'm hoping we get to see a new one next year? That's pretty hopeful of me though, admittedly.

I'm not so sure that they intended to update it again. I think the stadium staying where it is throws a wrench into things. Hopefully they do have a new plan or are working on one.
