Interesting stuff and a real eye-opener on those other PFL programs, Statman. Thanks!

I think he's definitely good for immediate publicity and interest in Campbell football, so perhaps he can help wrap-up the loose ends on getting the stadium completed.

Also, should help in recruiting over the next couple of years.

The head coach label will be essentially new to him, but we can't sink too much further down from last year's W-L record.

How long will it take to build his staff? Wonder if any of it is already set?

make sense, thanks for the explanation. Like I said, I'd be happy with competitive, hopefully we will do what it takes to get there.

Isaiah Thomas had a whole history of failures before he got to FIU. At least with Mike, he has (modest) successes so far in his career.

A year as an assistant and a year as special teams coordinator hardly can provide much proof of even modest success. Though I am excited with the higher and have faith he will have some success you can't ignore the lack of experience.

I want to say that I am extremely excited about the hire, but even the media has considered the hire "gutsy" for a reason. In all honesty, he has never called a single offensive or defensive play at the collegiate level. He has never had to manage a clock situation at the end of the game. Those are the negatives.

The positives are endless however especially if he is successful. This is a rare PR hit for CU overall and with success will continue to be a PR hit. I don't think as a fan you can be anything but excited about the hire. Now its up to CU to give Mike the tools necessary to be competitive and play for PFL titles.

As for the Isaiah Thomas reference, he was a first time hire somewhere without modest success. I don't know if being a two year position coach qualifies as modest success. Again, however, that is just a concern and is not indicative of my overall impressions of the hire.

I am including his HS State Championships when I say modest success. I know I know, different game, but at least he was the head of something related to football that was success.

I am very excited about the hiring of Coach Minter. Instant success is too much to expect, but excitement should surround the program as we hit the recruitment trail. I wonder if any of the current assistant coaches will be retained? Coach O?

RE: Football Coaching Change - Mike Minter
I think it's a fantastic hire by the University. As mentioned earlier, there are some substantial downsides to the hire (experience being the major one), but the PR boost this is going to get will be/should be well worth the risk, both on and off the field, such as:
1) By all accounts, a stand up guy who fits the mold of the University and it's Christian mission (always a plus!).
2) He should boost recruiting given the name recognition of the Coach. Some kids will (hopefully) want to play for him given his NFL pedigree and that they know him.
3) The fundraising benefit could be the most beneficial bit of the hire. Hopefully the increase in PR across the state will energize Camel Nation and we can get rid of the double-wide on stilts, and as others have suggested, increase the "need-based" moneys coming in to the program to go and get some better talent (in- and out-of-state).
Hopefully, he can get a good staff together. This will probably be his toughest job out of the gate due to his inexperience. It's an exciting day for the Creek!

RE: Football Coaching Change - Mike Minter
I'm not sure why there isn't more skepticism of this hire and his ability to actually lead a football program. I completely understand the PR/fundraising benefit of the hire. In my opinion, that's the main reason he was hired. I also don't think it hurts that he is probably independently wealthy from his NFL career as well as his real estate business. That probably helped because I'm sure the pay isn't that great, especially considering the challenge of winning as a DI non scholarship program.

My main concern is that he has virtually no coaching experience. The high school years at a tiny little school don't count really and he has very low level experience in college. A special teams coordinator is not that high up the totem pole on the coaching staff. My question is does he even know where to begin this morning when he sits down at his desk? His playing experience is cited as a reason for his hire, but a player knows and understands very little of what the coaches actually do outside of practice and games. My guess is it will take a year or two before he even begins to really understand all of his responsibilities, much less take care of them and be successful. I really, really hope he is successful. Im concerned that he is in way over his head though and is blissfully unaware of this fact as he seems to be completely confident that he can do the job.

RE: Football Coaching Change - Mike Minter
I have seen a lot of questioning about this hire. From a PR and recruiting standpoint I think it is a good hire. We all know the issues with recruiting to the Creek, hopefully a big well known name as well as some more need based money will entice more talent to come. As far as experience goes he doesn't have a lot but he seems to bring a new energy that I feel the program was lacking under Steele. We shall see how it goes.
