RE: 2012 Coaching Carousel
What kind of odds could I get that Kentucky's next head coach will be Bobby Petrino? Based on their last basketball hire, integrity is not required as long as he can bring the wins.

Chris, I'd say it depends on who is bidding against them...

I think it's worth considering that to a university president, what Petrino did in abusing his position, is much worse than NCAA recruiting violations. And then it's also worth noting that Kentucky doesn't care about winning at football, so their willingness to take on scandal for that is much lower than in basketball.

I think Petrino is going to have to "drop down" to a CUSA or Sun Belt program for 2-3 years and keep his nose clean.

Petrino will be the hottest name out there despite what happened. Auburn will probably hire him.

Richt has at least another year with the win over Florida, and the fact that nobody in the SEC is beating Bama this year.

You are right, and you are wrong. You are right that the date is after December 1st. On or prior to December 1st his buyout is 9 million. On December 2nd it becomes 7.5 million. The trustees have already raised the money. Understand that Auburn generated 93 million last year. We'll feel the 7.5, but we'll feel it worse if we don't pull the trigger. We average about 8 plus million per home game in gate. The concessions are higher. And like most small college towns the merchants are among the most faithful and generous givers to the athletic fund and campus advertising. They were devastated this year by two opening losses before we even played a home game. The overtime victory over La Monroe killed the season for them in September.

This is the worst season for Auburn since 1952. It is also the first class that is fully Chizik's. The story in Auburn from a year ago is that Malzahn left in part because Gene interfered with his decision to play Trotter at QB. Chizik preferred Frazier. Malzahn felt he needed another year to learn the system. Frazier stepped in and Auburn lost. After Malzahn accepted the Arkansas State job the compromise for him to stay for the Peach Bowl game was that Malzahn would call the shots for the bowl. At the first sign of struggle Trotter came into the game and helped Auburn open it up against Virginia. It was a heckuva turnaround offensively for Auburn.

You've seen the offense this year. Without Malzahn in his corner Trotter walked with 1 year left to play. He's a great young man who used this year to finish his education. Chizik owns this mess and he owns the hiring of Loeffler, for whom I have sympathy. He has had to install a new system with players recruited for the spread. Ted Roof seems to be doing fine at Penn State. He complained of interference as well. The defense is clearly absent this year in spite of some stellar talent on the line. But the coup de grace for Chizik was the leniency he showed to Dyer. It brought division to the team last year. In the end the tailback violated rule after rule eventually leading to his dismissal.

Chizik won the national title with Tuberville's recruits, and a phenomenal junior college transfer we all know as Cam. The rest is just pure Chiz! JR

Update: The word on campus in Auburn today was that the University president had notified the Trustees that he is making a schedule to include time for a coaching search.

So it takes one home game to get rid of Chizik. He's toast then because Auburn doesn't like to loose especially the way they are getting torched right now. Heck even Iowa St wouldn't take him back at this point.

My list of the majors right now that will be looking to replace fired coaches:

Auburn
Tennessee
NC State
Boston College
Colorado
Idaho - small potatoes but they already fired their coach. They have to win some games if they are going to hang on long enough to get picked up by their dream conference the MWC or if they have to settle for the Sunbelt again should they be asked back there with New Mexico St for FB only.

I also think that Edsel is getting some heat after the Terps disastrous season. He'll get a bye this year due to the fact that they can't afford to fire him and because of the injuries. What are they on QB 6 or 7. Heard they were playing a line backer in that position this week who had high school QB experience. If he doesn't start winning next year he will be at the top of the list when it is ax time next year.

Richt is safe at Georgia. They just won their division in SEC yesterday and get to play in the Championship game. Coaches who have their teams ranked in the top 5 in the country don't get fired. He is actually pretty amazing though the way he always pulls himself and his team out of the fire pit every year. If Georgia would ever fire him he would have a job the next day. He is a good coach and runs a relatively clean program. He deals with the players that cross the line. No cover ups there at Georgia under his watch.

04-cheers

If you'll check the date of my post you will see that it was made well in advance of the Georgia game. Auburn won't be firing Chizik after one game, but rather after the worst season in 60 years and that with 4 successive top 10 recruiting classes and three seasons in which we couldn't find a solution to worsening discipline problems. And, you need to add Arkansas and Kentucky to your list. JR

Chizak is gone. He just doesn't know it yet. John L. Smith, Joker Phillips, and Derek Dooley will be following him into SEC limbo. IMO all 4 will be gone before the bowl season starts...

Your right - I forgot Arkansas and Kentucky. Joker's gone already and Smith's contract will not be renewed after this season. He should have stayed at Weber State and then retired when he finished there. He so far in debt and bankrupt so they will have to carry him off the field though. Too bad all those investments went south on him so late in life.

Dooley has been a foregone conclusion for weeks now. It was just a matter of time. Going 0 for the SEC, and losing to Vandy made it real easy to pull the trigger...
