Rank BE/nBEast BBall Coaches
Following up on TexanMark's cool thread. Here's my take based on mix of X's & O's, recruiting, staffs & teams history of overachieving/underachieving:

Tier 1
Pitino, JB, Larry Brown

Tier 2
JT3, Cronin, Purnell, Buzz, Brey, Wright, Dixon, Lavin, Pastner, Heath

Tier 3
None

Too Soon but looking good:
Rice, Cooley

Too Soon but not looking good:
Williard (come on damn it!)

Too Soon to tell:
Ollie

I'm not familiar enough with coaches of UCF, UofH, Temple to rate.

I think the coaching in the conference is & will continue to be outstanding...notice no coaches on the hot seat that I am aware of.

A trip to the NCAA's with a team of nobodies then brought in TWO high ranked recruiting classes including the #2 class in the country last year. That deserves a higher ranking than 3rd tier for Mr. Lavin.

If he and Cooley had more on-court success under their belts then they'd be tier 2. Their names just don't belong with those in tier 2, at least not yet. 04-cheers

He has had a bunch of sweet 16 appearances at UCLA.

I think existing BE coaches is the subject, although Rock slipped SMU's coach in (it was the only nBE coach he included though).

He included Pastner and said he didn't know much about UCF and Houston. The title included nBE. That (nBE) might mean different things to different people, depending on what year they are living in.

From a X and O standpoint, Larry Brown can out coach every name on that list.

Exactly...I would also include putting players in the league or more generally player development.

Dunphy is probably a Tier 2 coach, but a Tier 3 recruiter.

The Big East has the best group of second tier (very good, bordering elite) coaches in America.

If you are ranking the coaches ofthe league, someone has to fit I each category. Based on his ranking system, if you move lavin up , who do you move down? Sure you can make a case to do so, but his ranking is not egregious either.

That's not what I mean. If this is a ranking of NBE coaches, wouldn't boeheim be disqualified?

To follow up on my point about coaching strength in the BEast here is a cbssports article from Goodman & Parrish about Top 20 coaches on the how seat:

Coaches on the Hot Seat

None of from the BEast. Here is a breakdown by conference:

Pac10 - 6 coaches
B1G - 2
Big12 - 1
ACC - 1

I think it depends on your criteria for rating the coaches. Is it x’s and o’s, NCAA tournament success, conference titles, recruiting?

Temple fans have mixed feelings about Fran Dunphy, but personally I like his style a lot and he’s a class guy who always leaves the program in a good light. I would rate him at the upper half of the second tier, only because of his struggles in the NCAA tournament.

Recently Dunphy was voted the most underrated coach in the country by a poll of 100 of his peer coaches.
