There's no denying that there's been some slacking in the past with recruiting and a lowering of standards. However, I think last year's class is a step in the right direction. They all seem like great, smart kids. As far as I've seen, they aren't constantly skipping classes unlike a couple other guys recently booted off the team.

We get a couple bigs and we'll be alright.

A high school coach. Why stop there? My son's 7-8 year old Rec League coach went undefeated two years running.

I'm not saying Mike Jones wouldn't be a great coach in college. Just saying you don't go from Dematha to a college head coach gig in one swoop. Hire him as an assistant the next time there is an opening. Let him prove he can recruit at the college level first before you entrust him with a program.

He would outrecruit Blaine in a heartbeat. That in and of itself might make it worth it. And I was just spitballing and that was the first name that came to my head. I'd like to think when we make a move up to CUSA, we could get a coach like Steve Prohm from Murray State to move up (I think ODU is a move up from Murray State) maybe some top assistants from big time programs might be interested (and I mean TOP assistants) or perhaps try and woo a big name from another University with a big time contract.

I'm just saying there are other options. Blaine has earned several years to put things back together and as I already said, I really like last year's recruiting class, that seemed to me to be a step in the right direction although it does trouble me Anichebe sounds like another big time project).

Taylor dropped the ball on recruiting for a couple straight years. No denying it. So he got back on track last year. Good. Now if he can keep it up, we won't have any more big time setbacks like we've had recently with players getting in academic trouble, off the court trouble and having to drop out of school).

But to act like we don't have options is crazy.

There is more to running a program than recruiting. Seth Greenberg was a good recruiter, but a horrible coach and he ran a terrible program.

I've heard from people than Painter said he has learned more about BB in a few months under BT than 3 years in the freaking ACC. I'll take the word of a college basketball player over internet wannabes.

Everyone needs to becareful what you ask for. In the 80s the big money donors forced JJ to get rid of Paul Webb. Webb was a great man, but he ran a very bad offense for a D1 program. His teams were boring to watch on the offensive side of the ball. So he was forced out. And we got a coach who was a good Xs and Os guy. Knew the game. But couldn't recruit and couldn't get his teams to play together. Of course he was cursed with the worse "team" player for a star we ever had, Chris Gatling. The program was headed in the wrong direction, that could have sent us into the pit. Thankfully, the next hire, Ollie, helped kick start the program until the next guy ran it into the ground.

If an when the time comes to hire another coach, though, I'd rather have Selig making the decision than the prior AD.

So far, minus a few hiccups in diplomacy I guess you can call it, I trust Selig to make a good hire if/when that time comes.

Weren't you just complaining about the qualifications of our D-coordinator about a month ago? Now you're suggesting we let a high school coach run the basketball program? Which is it?

Yes I was and I stick to that. Dee has done a pretty piss poor job overall and I don't think he is our D coordinator of the future.

But that doesn't mean every high school coach would be terrible at the next level. Hell you could make a case that Dematha could beat some lower level CAA teams with the talent they have.

My point wasn't that Jones is a better coach than Blaine, I was simply saying he'd be a better recruiter than him from day 1.

Secondly, football is a little different than basketball. You only have 5 guys on the court in basketball, talent matters more in basketball than it does in football. A well coached football team with less talent can beat a more talented football team that is poorly coached far more often than a well coached basketball team with little talent can beat a poorly coached team with a ton of talent.

There are a ton of examples of mediocre coaches at big time NCAA schools winning because of talent (Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech is a prime example) than there are examples of teams with great coaches with lesser talent kicking ass every single year. For every Davidson or Colgate there are 150 other D1 teams that don't have talent enough that it wouldn't even matter if John Wooden was coaching them.

That is why what Norfolk State did is so stunning. Because they beat a far superior team talent wise with a great gameplan. But if you think Norfolk State and Mizzou play 10 times, how many do you realistically expect Norfolk State to win?? 1, maybe 2???

Talent is more important than coaching. That's why a bum like Calipari wins so much. He gets the best talent every single year because he is the best recruiter in college basketball (even if he has to cheat to do it). He isn't a brilliant basketball tactician. He just lined up 6 NBA calibur players out there last year and ran teams off the court.

Blaine has a system and it works for him. That's apparent to anyone with eyes. My contention has never been than Blaine's system "doesn't work".

My contention is that his system is limited by the type of system it is, by the style of ball we play and therefore the type of player we could recruit. Finney Smith didn't want to come to ODU because he wants to be a superstar and he knows Taylor's offense isn't going to let that happen. That's a damn fact and we all know it. Momma Finney and DFS think he is an NBA caliber player and they believe that he isn't going to get enough exposure or put up the type of stats it takes to get drafted at ODU playing under Blaine's system and guess what, they are right.

So my point is, Taylor's system, while effective, limits our potential because of who we can recruit to come play his style of ball.

Mike Jones may not be as good a coach, he might not even be anywhere near Blaine, but I guarantee you he would recruit circles around Blaine in the 757 and he could have absolutely landed DFS, among others, at ODU. That was my point.

It has nothing to do with Bill Dee and it isn't a shot at Blaine. It's just one man's opinion and you are entitled to disagree.

Ever hear of the gradeschool game "telephone"? I heard "from people" that Kent Bazemore said Blaine was a horrible coach. What now?

Razor, you might be right. I could care less about basketball. Wrestling season is here, & I appreciate the violence it offers much more than the whistle-fest that is basketball. I just wanted to point out the inconsistency. If you get too frustrated this winter, feel free to stop by & catch a match!

I've watched an interview of Kent Bazemore, who couldn't stop giving praise to Blaine Taylor... Let me see if I can go find it...
