The College of Charleston Board of Trustees voted 12-5 to accept an invitation to join the Colonial Athletic Association, the school said Friday.

The board gave President George Benson permission to start contract negotiations with the CAA.

The Cougars are expected to leave for the 2013-14 season but would face a $600,000 exit fee for leaving with less than two years' notice.

The Southern Conference doesn't have a provision that would prevent the Cougars from playing in the conference championships, unlike the America East, CAA and Horizon League.

Does ETSU want this slot (non-football state school)? Is Noland on this? If ETSU really wants this slot, what'll Noland have to do to make it happen? Which schools are in the running for this slot?
So many questions.

One would think that we would be the overwhelming first choice to go back to the SoCon. I hope all parties can ignore the Stanton/Mullins debacle of the last nine years.

Most unfortunately, half of the team of that debacle is still in power at ETSU --- which, with each passing day, is beyond amazing.

the SoCon is not interested in ETSU with Mullins in charge. they have bad memories of him as a hot headed/arrogant tennis coach who had no respect for any of the other schools, coaches or players in the SoCon.

Nice op-ed piece about their situation.

Should I Stay or Should I Go Now

Key points:

The potential for our students to be affiliated with these schools can be extremely beneficial.

If we want to grow, if we want to expand, if we want to be what we have the potential to be, it’s time to step up.

If you feel that we are OK where and how we are, if you don’t feel like testing yourself, if you don’t like the danger inherent in new opportunity, then this move isn’t for you. Just be willing to admit to yourself the reason why.

Would ETSU sacrifice readmission into the Southern Conference in order to continue and protect the position of one individual -- Dave Mullins!?!?!?

My thinking is that IF the President thinks we have a legit shot at the Southern and Mullins would hurt that, this would be a perfect time to let Mullins "retire", name the new tennis courts after him, and get in who Noland wants to be the long term AD.

Agree. As I have said before, if we get passed up for the SoCon here, we may be stuck in the ASUN, with our only hope of getting into a better league, being if we add football. It may force the presidents hand.

I have heard through the grapevine that this plan is actually already in place. Once the tennis courts are completed, they name them after Dave and he retires on that note. Supposed to happen in the spring. This was prior to CofC's decision. Nolan's is being aggressive with athletics behind the scenes from what I've heard.

actually - the board voted to allow the president to begin negotiations with the CAA to join. will depend a bit on the financial stuff (buy-in, etc.). Charleston board is not 100% behind this which is something to watch. my guess is that at the end of the day if the financials make sense they will jump.

now, this could open up a slot for etsu in the southern, or perhaps even in the caa (will need to build out a southern division). president has been zeroed in on conference affiliation since he arrived on campus. he has been making the appropriate contacts. will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Fingers on both hands are crossed! I am hoping for a very positive outcome for ETSU. We need some breaks right now.

Dr Noland really wants us in the CAA. I don't see how that happens. ETSU culture and CAA culture are a little different to say the least.

Folks in hell would like a glass of water and air conditioning, too. ETSU just doesn't fit anything the CAA does, but certainly it's good to aim high. The only reason they might take a look is it's a new state, but I wouldn't call the region of east Tennessee fertile when it comes to basketball recruits in division I. I can't imagine that CAA teams have use for a 6'4 post who can't shoot the three, handle the basketball or dunk.
It's nice that he's trying, and I think we have to appreciate the idealism, but the reality is ETSU can't win the A-Sun consistently, we'd get slaughtered in the CAA.
Welcome to the Big South, after Liberty leaves.

No Big South. That would be the last step down before falling into DII.
