UTEP vs TU Assessments
Nice night for fb - glad it didn't rain. Crowd was OK for a weeknight, but I always worry they won't show when the stadium looks empty 10 minutes before the game.

-------------------------------------------------------

UTEP -

I never figured out what the "surprise" was that Price was going to use as a new weapon. I thought it might possibly be a double QB system - i.e. two QBs on the field at the same time to pitch and throw or throw and lateral or something like that every play. But in the end, I think it was just going to be him going to the backup QB sooner. Thats no surprise as far as I'm concerned.

UTEPs defense is well coached and pretty aggressive and quick. Their offense has a few good receivers, but their QB's play a little scared.
UTEPs kicker looked like a future pro last night.

-----------------------------------------------------------

TU -

Our defense always gets tough on the goaline. Even though UTEP moved the ball, we had a nice GL stand. Our secondary is slowly getting worse and our corners are consistently beaten. I always have concerns when it looks like we are playing zone underneath and "are we in zone or man" deep. I don't think its losing our man as much as it is a matter of miscommunication most of the time. Run defense was solid last night against a run game that torched OU.

Offense was pretty pathetic from a pass standpoint, but right now we are best running up the gut - its just about all we got IMO. Cody was able to mostly handoff, but this business of him being "hurt" doesn't wash with me. Either he can go or he can't. CFB players always have bangs and bruises, so that is just part of the game. If its just an excuse for poor execution so far this year, then shame on that. I like Singleton, but we are just telegraphing what we are doing - I don't like that unless both teams are fighting for a yard.

CG - IMO this may have been his worst overall game from a mechanics standpoint. He is throwing more often on that back foot and I alluded to it on an earlier thread that getting away with a backfoot throw then (a Roberson TD) would create future problems because he was allowed to put that as a success in his memory banks. It may cause him to regress even more from here on - not good. (BTW, I think TU's coaches tend to be so postitive that they sometimes give "false praise" IMO). It is obvious to me that discussing a QB change has become somewhat pointless because I don't think they are willing to do it as long as they can win games by "managing". IMO

Kicking game (kickers-snappers) need more consistency, but I see lots of potential there.
