RE: is it time to panic
I think they still have good talent but aren't the team of old. Pretty soon the offense is going to be the focal point and not the defense. The defense definitely needs an influx of youth in my opinion.

My question is what type of scheme will they run after Lebeau moves on? Tomlin's background is Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2. I wouldn't be surprised to see a shift to that in one form or another in the future.

I know things are looking up and this post is old but it is still a good question. I think Tomlin does go back to a Tampa 2. Half the time we are in passing downs now and in some form of that anyway as Hampton is only on the field for 1st and sometimes 2nd down.

Also, it isn't just Monte Kiffin's Tampa 2. That scheme made famous by the Bucs was also Tony Dungy's Cover 2 which he implemented from Chuck Noll and Bud Carson from his time with the Steelers. So converting to this defense would still be Steeler football and almost a coming full circle so to say.

They also say the Kieth Butler has been promised the DC job, since Butler turned down the Colts DC last year, it must be coming sooner than later. When it does, look for former Bucs HC Reheem Morris to join the Steelers defensive staff in some sort of prominant way. He coached with MT back in Tampa and the two are very close. Their families even vacation together each summer.

I'm interested in how the current/next years defense suits a 4-3.

OLB Slyvester/ Worilds
DE Woodley
DT Hood
DT Ta,Amu
DE Keisel/ Heyward
OLB Harrison/Worilds
MLB Timmons

CP, I see something that looks a lot like that too. I also think that having Palomalu sit back in a Tampa 2 much like John Lynch did might be a possible angle to keep Troy playing and productive for another "couple" years.

I think maybe Woodley at outside linbacker and you would have to hope that both Heyward and Hood are ready to start with Keisel and then Ta"Amu. Still need to draft more linebackers...

RE: is it time to panic
Funny you mention drafting LB's. I tend to think that this is Harrison's last year in the Black n Gold. If Ta'Amu isn't ready then your DT's are Hood and Heyward. I don't know where the other DE would come from because this could also be Keisel's last year. I'd look long and hard at drafting a 4-3 DE/3-4 LB in the first round. That was one of the reasons why I placed Woodley at DE. He's the prototypical player that could be a DE in the 4-3 set or an LB in a 3-4 set. You could also be able to shift from a 3-4 to a 4-3 on any given set w/out changing personal when Ta'Amu is ready. I have 0 idea where Spence fits in this picture. He could be an LB on the same side as Woodley in a 4-3 and then shift to the middle when we go 3-4.

Looks like we can remove Ta'Amu from any future line ups. The dumb SOB got himself released.

DE Woodley
DT Hood
DT Heyward
DE ??????/
