RE: USA shooting
Looks like the investigation has turned up that the kid was on LSD... obviously no reason to shoot, but would be the reason for his behavior.

from Facebook post by Lagniappe (local paper down here):
Quote:Sheriff Sam Cochrane said his investigation has determined USA freshman Gil Collar obtained and ingested LSD at Bayfest before he returned to campus and was shot and killed by officer Travis Austin, a 27-year-old, four-year veteran. Cochrane said other people on campus were assaulted by Collar, but the alleged victims may not have reported the incidents to law enforcement.

RE: USA shooting
They are now looking for the person who gave him the LSD. He was tripping hard, and vandalized a couple cars and tried biting a girl in one car. The family will get to see the surveillance video tomorrow, and the press will get to see it Thursday. They want the family to be able to see how he was acting.

Sounds like more than LSD, especially after the mention of him trying to bite a girl. Not that I have personal experience with any hard drugs let alone anything close to LSD or bath salts, but this story is sounding more and more like the flurry of stories earlier this year when bath salts were becoming more and more prevalent. Again, no personal experience, but I've known a handful of people who use LSD recreationally and have never heard any of them say that them or any of their friends have ever had a reaction even remotely resembling this.

FWIW-I've never spoken with anyone who has told me they've used bath salts. While I don't really get using any hard drug, I don't think someone is "crazy" for trying LSD, but this bath salts stuff, and the stories that have come out, I just don't see how anyone ever even considers touching that stuff.

Easy to access. Hopefully this will spark some more legislation and some good can come out of a tragedy.

They have ordered the state to do a toxicology report on him ASAP. Co-workers and I have said it sounded like bath salts also. There's no telling. Given how erratic the student was I just don't understand the policeman not asking for backup.

My dad and I were discussing this. He may have called for back up but it didn't get there in time... and he couldn't just run and hide from the guy because it would be leaving him out in the open to attack other innocent students. Report said he tried to bite a girl already so who knows. I hope that the cop did call for backup, I would hate to hear he didn't even try.

Didn't this occur right outside the police station?

I also think some are downplaying how frightening it would be to see a naked man behaving the way this kid was. Remember the first story about the guy down in Miami? IIRC the guy was unresponsive to the first shot or two and the police officer eventually had to empty his clip to subdue the man.

Yes, but who knows where other cops where at the time this all happened. Not assuming anything till the investigation is over.

RE: USA shooting
So, the officer didn't have a taser or pepper spray. These should be standard issue.

Sad deal all around.

I agree about the tasers AND pepper spray.

RE: USA shooting
Just talked to my dad a minute ago about this and he said he read that this kid had a knife. Also, that this kid was a damn good wrestler.

I forgot to ask where he read it. I don't know if this has been brought up in this thread yet either.

RE: USA shooting
I heard about wrestling. I had not heard about the knife and I doubt that's true. There would be zero investigation if the kid had a knife on him.

A couple quotes from the article
Quote:Austin told investigators the action continued about 20-30 feet from the view of cameras, where Collar eventually rushed to within five feet of him, causing Austin to fire. Collar was never armed. He apparently stood up after being shot, but then collapsed and died from his injuries. Austin was put on administrative leave and the University has since kept quiet about the incident, out of respect for the investigation, Cochran said.

Quote:Collar was reported to be a high-school wrestling star with a muscular build, although multiple media reports have stated he wrestled in the 130-pound weight class, one of the smaller classes.
