Enrollment drops statewide
The numbers are out.

Enrollment falls at TBR colleges

ETSU has a VERY BIG PROBLEM on its' hands. Graduation/retention rates are horrible, which is directly related in the future to funding, also competition for traditional undergraduate freshman is about to get hot and heavy.

RE: Enrollment drops statewide
ETSU's graduation rate is their huge problem, not their enrollment numbers. Ideally (in my mind), enrollment will decrease further as we become forced to implement an actual enrollment standards for incoming freshman, thus raising the graduation rates

An interesting side effect in all of this is that they've lumped community/junior colleges in with the four year schools as it pertains to funding based on graduation. Well, most kids at Juco's don't graduate, they just transfer.
The numbers will become a problem as students go elsewhere, which I fully expect to happen.

RE: Enrollment drops statewide
If ETSU had of hit the state average, it would have lost 683 students instead of 128.

Wonder how ETSU will revise the below freshmen admissions requirements to help comply with the TBR retention/graduation funding requirements?

Of course, one way to increase admissions standards and maintain undergraduate enrollment or grow undergraduate enrollment is to increase the freshmen application pool from which to select freshmen. Obviously enrollment and quality can grow that way thus helping retention/graduation rates. Wonder if Dr. Noland has the increasing of ETSU's freshman application pool as a priority. ETSU is increasing graduate enrollment, which, I believe, is good.

Since this is an athletics forum, it can be mentioned that App State's enrollment growth and quality of students has been a result of an ever growing freshmen application pool from which to select freshmen. Would imagine their retention/graduation rates have improved as well. Can't help but think that their athletic success has contributed to this. Athletics is, indeed, the front porch of their university.

RE: Enrollment drops statewide
Well you have to have a 2.3 high school GPA, or a 2.0 if admitted as alternate ( I have no idea if this is everyone that applies with 2.0 gets accepted or if they indeed limit the number). But if you have a C average in high school- whats the chances of making better in college? There are many exceptions of high schoolers that "grow up" in college, but if you average everyone out as retention rates do, I bet there is a strong correlation between those who dont graduate college and those with lower high school GPA's.

I would be ok with either 1) raising the min. high school GPA a bit and leave the ACT score alone, or 2) leave the minimum requirements as is, and just limit admission to 15k or some number- thus making it somewhat competitive.

RE: Enrollment drops statewide
They need to raise it atleast to a 2.5. My goodness I slept through parts of high school and was better than that.
Truthfully, set a cap at 14,500 for 2013-2014 with undergraduate freshman admissions set to a 2.5. From there, community college transfers, UNLESS THEY GRADUATE should have a 2.3 minimum. If they graduate then the university parallel program kicks in and they are guaranteed admission. That should clean it up a little bit.
I have a feeling all across Tennessee we'll start to see changes.

If you're not funded on total the numbers/head count method anymore, then a cap would seem the way to go if the new funding formula does not penalize you for doing that. Limiting access could become a political issue though. But, over time, a cap on enrollment would increase student quality and probably result in increased applications once the more selective admissions standards become known. You know, changing the perception can make your product more desirable.

I like it, but seriously though it actually is a real world issue and not just for ETSU, but all the schools in Tennessee.
