More people should post on this board so we can really say to those spoiled brats to bugger off. I’m of Irish decent and more proud of that fact than I can ever convey with words. However, I can’t stand them.

I am of Irish decent and I love Notre Dame, outside of Louisville they are my favorite college team. I share some of the dismay about the situation at hand but I still like the Irish. The Irish are good for college Football, sorry, but it is a fact.

They just need to give the BE 3-4 games a year home and home. With that they'll have a chance to earn any BE bowl they would be involved in.

Unless more come over for b-ball season, the above 2 ND posters are the only 2 I ever remember seeing on the board.

I respect Notre Dame, but IMHO I think they should be given an ultimatum. Either join the Big East in football or pull out all together. I realize that everyone "thinks" they are our "Big Easts" "saviour" to bowls, but, go ahead and allow the Gator and whatever bowls have ties with ND to pull out. They'll see that with just a one team contract without the Big East, their bowls won't be as competitive.

Would you make the same argument to Georgetown and Villanova? The fact is that playing Big East football is not a requirement of membership and unless you have the votes to change the rules, ND is under no obligation to do so.

That is why the split will happen, hi-bred confernces do not stand the test of time. Bottom line the BE as it is currently configured will not survie. 04-cheers

The irish dictate what they want on their own terms. To satisfy the football gods they have decided to alighn with the Big East. They play 3 GaMES EACH YEAR. thats it folks. They will remain independent. No way do they join the BE.

Under the circumstances, the Big East is in no position to be giving anybody an ultimatum. I have overcome my hatred for Notre Dame and can even root for them sometimes in football. Instead of talking about our jealousy of a great team (yeah, I'll admit they're great, and their comeback this year has been something to watch), we should be spending our energy making our conference the best it can be. It's clearly in transition right now, but we need to ensure that in the future it's a conference that schools want to end up in, and not one that schools see as the best available until an invitation into the ACC, SEC, or Big10 comes along. Clearly having this confusing patchwork of basketball/football schools is an example of our weakness and not our strength.
Someday I hope we'll be a strong all-sports conference filled with schools who want to be in the Big East and can't be tempted to move on. When that happens, we can say respectfully to Notre Dame, "Thanks for your past participation, but the time has come to choose: Join us for football or we'll need to move on without you."
So if Notre Dame fans want to post on Big East boards, that's fine. The more ties that bind us, the better. Personally I think ND will someday be in the Big 10. But if it's the Big East, nothing would make me happier (except watching Louisville beat them). Certainly being part of the best basketball conference in the country can't hurt our relationship with them. It won't be easy to turn your back on that, even if football is your flagship sport.

I have no control over what ND ever does but, I can't see them joining the Big Ten/Eleven. I am confident that the Big Ten/Eleven will make a run in the near future at a Big East school to get to 12 members and a big money making conference championship game. If the Big East continues the way it is, I think that team will be Louisville. This is all just opinion and nothing shows the Big Ten/Eleven to be leaning this way. Its just my thoughts....which mean squat 04-drinky

The Big10 footprint has always been the midwest. They already left that region to pick up Penn State (a mistake on everybody's part I think, but what's done is done). I doubt they'll then go south of the Mason-Dixon line to pick up Louisville, moreover Louisville academic standards aren't high enough for the Big10 and probably never will be. I think the Big10's holding out for Notre Dame. And I believe the Big10 is the only possible conference for Notre Dame, should they decide to join one, due to its football tradition and high academic profile. If they get another school it might be Pitt (to somehow make the Penn State mistake more sensible) or they might even entice a Big12 school (Iowa State or Mizzou) into their fold. But it won't be UofL, and I doubt they'd go for Cincinnati either, for academic reasons (plus Ohio State just wouldn't allow it).

The Big Ten's academics and Iowa State's lack of a major market won't allow it to take in Iowa State. The Cyclones would love to be in the Big Ten, but considering the enormous struggle it took just to get Michigan State, a school with higher standards than Iowa State, in, I seriously doubt Iowa State will get invited. Missouri is a mystery to me. I can see the Big Ten at least thinking them over due to market. But their academics are similar to Iowa State's. And that's a big sticking point for the Big Ten. I'll put Missouri down as a "maybe." Another candidate that has been mentioned before (although laughed at) has been Rutgers. Even though it does sound rather preposterous, Rutgers has just about everything the Big Ten wants except for a winning football or basketball tradition. It is the state university of New Jersey and the Big Ten is big on flagship type schools, plus it is located in a large market. Even Rutgers' academics are good. However, Rutgers lacks athletic prowess, and that's why the Big Ten hasn't really been going after Rutgers. If Rutgers had the success Pittsburgh has had, I'm sure they would be a shoo-in candidate for the Big Ten.

Big East should be looking at rising athletic programs

There are candidates out there that would expand the Big East's footprint into large markets and are competitive in the 2 major cash cow sports

1) NIU- large enrollment (25K+) successful in football (won the MAC West in 05, were 10-1 in 03 with wins over Maryland(#2 in ACC) Alabama and Iowa St). Led the MAC in football attendance in 05. Currently leading the MAC West in men's hoops, also have OOC wins vs Kansas State and DePaul(for the 2nd straight season). Not to mention only 50 miles from the #3 market in America. Football and hoops broadcast on a 50K watt AM sports talk station.

2) Toledo- large enrollment, successful football program both on the field and in attendance. In the last 10 years have defeated Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue and Minnesota in football. Not the market size of Chicago but NW Ohio is a football hotbed.

Both programs Sagarin and BCS ratings are better than 5 of the 8 BE football programs, joining a BCS conference would improve the recruiting of both significantly. 04-rock

Toledo would accept going to the Big East. 02-13-banana I think we could hold our own in a big time conference. We have some great recruits coming in this year and should have another winning season w/ a bowl game. 04-rock Anything to get us out of the MAC!

Not true. I proved an NIU fan wrong on that last week, so that must be some mantra on the MAC board that is repeated though incorrect.

Check out Sagarin's ratings to see the truth!
