RE: WVU-Texas
Here's a nice article about the first meeting between WVU and Texas in 1956 at Austin, which WVU won 7-6. The 1956 game gives WVU a 1-0 lead over Texas to jump start the Mountaineers B12 rivalry with Texas...

Mickey Fufari, who has been covering WVU sports for over 60 years, wasn't able to witness that game first hand. In those days, no newspapers sent reporters on road games, unless the road game was within driving distance, to save money. They got reports off the AP or UPI wire (depending on the service each paper used) from local reporters who covered the game for the home team. But Mickey, working WVU's sports beat for the Morgantown Dominion Post in those days, was the first person they talked to when the team returned to Morgantown...

WVU hooked 'Horns in 1956
Quote:Larry Krutko remembers West Virginia's 7-6 victory over Texas on Oct. 6, 1956, in Austin, Texas.

"I scored our touchdown and Paul 'Whitey' Mikanik kicked the game-winning extra point," the Carmichaels, Pa., native recalled this week.

Krutko was a 6-foot-1, 210-pound fullback who also played linebacker on defense.

"I remember that it was a night game, and I scored on a run of 14 or 15 yards," he said. "Fullbacks did more rushing in those years than they do today."

Mickey Trimarki was the WVU quarterback then. But he said from his Burgettstown, Pa., home that he doesn't remember much about that game.

"But I don't think Texas was nearly as strong then as it is today."

Krutko tended to agree with him.

It's a pity this game isn't in Morgantown. Folks from Texas could see some great fall color. This pic was taken at Dolly Sods today...

Congrats to WVU from a former BE conferencemate.

With losses by FSU, LSU and UGA, WVU should be a top 5 team by Sunday.

Stay on the rise.
