B1G = Semi + Rose
P12 = Semi + Rose
B12 = Semi + Sugar
SEC = Semi + Sugar
ACC = Orange
Oth = Access
ND = Orange
Only 1 spot left (ACC or SEC)
I look at the 12 New BCS slots as follows:
4 Semis - likely to go, on average, to one team each from 4 of the Big 5 conferences
SEC #1 - Sugar
B12 #1 - Sugar
B1G #1 - Rose
P12 #1 - Rose
ACC #1 - Orange
SEC #2/B1G #2/ND - Orange
G5 #1 - Access Bowl
At Large - Access Bowl
Really, there is only one true at large slot. It is not clear to me whether additional at large spots will be freed for years in which the champion of a Big 5 conference is in the semis and that conference's Contract Bowl is a semi. Will the #2 team in that conference still get a Access Bowl invite, or will the available slot created by this situation become a true at large slot?
Here is a breakdown of this season's hypothetical bids as of today:
Semi: Oregon
Semi: Kansas State
Semi: Notre Dame
Semi: Alabama/Georgia winner
SEC #1 - Florida
B12 #1 - Oklahoma
B1G #1 - Nebraska
P12 #1 - Stanford
ACC #1 - Florida State
SEC #2/B1G #2/ND - Georgia/Alabama loser
G5 #1 - Louisville
At Large - TAMU or Clemson
If the Rose were a semifinal in this scenario, would Stanford, at #13 in the BCS standings, still have a BCS slot guaranteed, or would the slot become an at large slot for a top 10 school to claim?
It is clear. ONLY conference champions have a BCS slot guaranteed. If Rose is hosting the SF, Stanford is not guaranteed at all.....

RE: More Gr8 News from the Cuse Mole
this years games-
Rose/access 1 hosting sf-
sf Oregon/Alabama/Georgia Winner
sf Kansas St/Notre Dame
Sugar LSU/Oklahoma
Orange Florida St/SEC team
The 2 access bowls-
1 slot must go to Nebraska(Big Ten Champ)
1 slot must go to Louisville(G5)
The other 2 slots are up for grabs.
If Sugar hosting sf along with access 2
Sugar Kansas St/Notre Dame
Access 2 Oregon/Alabama
Rose Stanford/Nebraksa
Orange Florida St/LSU
The access bowls only have Louisville to fill- 3 open slots.
If Orange hosting, along with access 3
Orange Kansas St/Notre Dame
access 3 Oregon/Alabama
Rose Nebraska/Stanford
Sugar Oklahoma/LSU
Access bowls must take Louisville and Florida St. 2 open slots.

RE: More Gr8 News from the Cuse Mole
Can someone point me to where it says the semi final teams will get replaced by someone in their conference.
If, for instance, FSU were undefeated and top 4 right now, would Clemson automatically get the Orange Bowl spot regardless of where they ranked? That seems to be what everyone is doing with the Stanford scenario.

I'm not sure where, but yes, if Orange is not hosting a sf, Clemson would be automatic for the Orange Bowl as a replacement for Florida St. Even if they got drubbed by 50 by South Carolina.

How many teams does this work for? If you have three SEC teams in the semi finals, would the Sugar bowl still get to choose the fourth ranked and the Orange choose the fifth ranked even if they are in the 20's by this point?

1st your question would require Rose to be hosting sf.
Sugar- yes.
Orange- if 5th team was ranked ahead of Notre Dame(not in playoff) or non Big Ten champion- SEC team would go.

Yes as long as the orange is not hosting the semi's that year. the orange could also replace Clemson if another access bowl wanted to choose them

I don't think there would be any mechanism for Clemson to go to an access bowl...
Where a mechanism would be in place, say Sugar wanted LSU but Orange had Florida St, and the next SEC team would be Florida, could see LSU and Florida flop to make it no rematch.....

Stever - that's my understanding as well. The Orange gets the ACC champ or the first choice of ACC schools not in the FFF. If the Orange is a semi, the ACC champ is guaranteed no worse than an Access Bowl slot. I'm guessing that there will be provisions for the Chick-Fil-A bowl to get the ACC champ when the Orange is a semi and the ACC champ is not in the semis.

I'd guess you'd be right- just from a geographical perspective, Chick-fil-a is by far closer for ACC than Fiesta or Cotton....

yeah i was overthinking when i typed that. i meant to say that the acc could put the losing team from the acc championship in the orange bowl if clemson was ranked high enough to get placed in one of the access bowls.
