Now that we are approaching the halfway point in the season (5 of 11 games played for UofL) IF he keeps this pace up could Elvis Dumervil win a national award? He isn't eligible for the Outland Trophy as he is not an interior lineman.

The Nagurski Award is for the nation's best defensive player in general. However, they issued a 50 player list of players preseason and the only way to win the award is to be among the 50 OR to be named their National Defensive Player of the Week. If named player of the week you are added to the list eligible for the Yearly Award.

We'll see how much respect he gets this week. Call me biased but without studying every game's box score from today I doubt many had a better game than:

7 tackles
3 of those 7 tackles were for a loss (26 total yards lost)
3 sacks (25 yards lost)
2 Forced fumbles
1 INT

There was no reason to place Dumervil on the pre-season 50 watchlist. He didn't belong based on his previous seasons where he was solid but not like this. However, if they are truly aware of the whole nation they will name him Player of the Week now to ensure he is on the eligible list for the award. They announce the Finalist List of Players in late November and that is probably 8-12 guys (guessing). In my opinion they'd look pretty ridiculous if a guy is about to break the NCAA All-time single season sack record and isn't at least on their Finalist List.

I also just read that he is only 1 forced fumble from tying the single season mark. Dwight Freeny and a guy from Boise St hold the record at 8 for a season.

For the season after 5 games he has:

35 tackles (17 of those 35 are for a loss)
15 sacks
7 Forced fumbles
1 INT

Terrell Suggs holds the NCAA single season sack record at 24 (2003). Dumervil's numbers are good enough you cannot say he will keep them up. They could drop off decently and he'd still be playing pretty good. BUT.. he is only 9 off tying the NCAA single season sack record with 6 games left and he has so far averaged 3 a game. You cannot expect 3 sacks every game, especially this coming week likely, but he will likely be licking his chops as we come upon UofL game week for UC and Pitt.

Here is a link from last month about the weekly award. I didn't see it mentioned here but USF's Ben Moffitt won the weekly award, ironically against UofL. He is 1 of 4 to be added to the watch list so far this season.

I'll be watching to see if he gets recognized this week by the Nagurski Committee.

Right now Elvis Dumervil is playing like the second coming of Dwight Freeny. He will be 1st team All American when it is all said and done.

dumervil is amazing, are you sure he didn't win that award when he had 6 sacks against kentucky? that was downright comical.

usf's offensive line has been the only one that's stopped him so far this season (i could be wrong but i don't think he even had a tackle) i thought he'd run wild against us especially after our LT watson called him out before the game. then again our o-line also held penn st w/o a sack and they looked pretty impressive against ohio st.

I wish I shared the optimism you guys have thus far. I hope and pray that I am wrong, but I fear that the nation is looking at his stats so far as beating up on mediocre to bad teams and dismissing it almost without consideration. A good game at West Virginia next weekend would help a TON if it's not downright necessary. Again, I hope it's not but I also can read the ugly writing on the wall directed against the entire Big East.

IMO, Dumervil's best hope is to be somehow named defensive player of the week at some point and get on the list for the Nagurski. I'm not very familiar with the award, but it appears to me that they can be just as quick to pick the best defensive player from the best teams as they pick the best defensive player period. Elvis will likely land on SOMEONE'S All American list, but I also think that a bunch of folks will just start listing good DE's from more well-respected conferences and overlook Kool in many of the AA lists.

As I said, I HOPE I am wrong... I think the media bashing just had me a bit jaded at this point.

Empire, that is basically why I posted that. To be honest, he could likely just pick up a couple more sacks on the year and lead the nation. If he was playing at certain other schools, he would be getting 15 minutes devoted to him every Saturday night on the CF Recap Hour Show. He was just given his 2nd helmet sticker of the season by Mark May on the Recap show. Obviously that means nothing really but just gets him more notice by some.

He has to get a player of the week to even be eligible for the award. If he does and he comes even close to continuing these numbers, it will show how biased they are if they just pick the top guy on the D team at USC or Texas.

To give an example of what he is up against, I did not see 1 second of TV video of our game today. Not 1 second. Not during numerous hafltimes of other games, not during an in-game breakaway that they do for 15 seconds, not on a few halftime shows during games on Fox Sports and Tbs (I believe that was the channel), OR the kicker:

I am pretty sure that UofL was the only Top 25 team that played today that didn't have video highlights on ESPN's hour wrap-up show. I saw highlights for every other team. The only reason I say I am "pretty sure" is b/c I cut to another channel for about 2 minutes at one point, maybe I was unlucky and just missed it but the odds say no.

the stats don't lie, he'll get his share of awards, and he had his best games against an sec, pac 10, and acc team. i believe boley from s. miss was an all american last year out of cusa and that de from troy won a bunch of awards playing out of the sun belt. hope the jags pick him up in the upcoming draft del rio can turn him into the second coming of derrick thomas. usf handled him but then again we also handled penn st's stud de as well. espn put him on the heisman watch and talked about his chances of winning during one of their shows. the media hasn't been that bad against the be, it's been no where near the level it was last year when wv ended up tanking down the stretch. i think espn has kinda laid off a bit although they still pick on pittsburgh to piss off mark may.

Yeah, just based on his stats pace, he's leading everyone. That gets you awards. And some of his plays are just pure fun to watch, too.

To answer your question Mike, they didn't start giving the weekly award until Sept 10th, after our UK game. The 4 weekly winners so far are from Ohio, USF, FSU, and Wake Forest; so they clearly will give the weekly award to guys that aren't at USC or Texas.

Dumervil got more love from ESPN last night so that helps. The game he had yesterday was simply amazing.

I just wonder what position do the NFL scouts see him as.
