SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio City Council approved a contract exte"nsion on Thursday, which allows UTSA to play its home football games in the Alamodome through 2035.

The contract ensures the Roadrunners will continue to host contests in the 65,000-seat facility throughout the next two decades. The program saw 213,126 fans come to the Alamodome during its inaugural campaign, which was an NCAA startup program-record 35,521 per contest.

“We appreciate the support of the city and its cooperation throughout the contract negotiations,” UTSA Athletics Director Lynn Hickey said. “The Alamodome is a tremendous asset to our program and the San Antonio community. It has been the home to several Final Fours, Alamo Bowls and a variety of other entertainment events. We are proud to bring major college football to the Alamodome on a permanent basis and believe that we have one of the best college football home stadiums in the country.”

The original agreement provided the Alamodome for the years 2011-15, but after city and UTSA officials experienced the incredible success of the Roadrunners’ first season, both parties made the decision to enter into a long-term agreement.

“The Alamodome is an outstanding football venue and we’re extremely pleased that it will continue to be used for this purpose in the many years to come,” Convention, Sports and Entertainment Facilities Department Director Michael Sawaya said. “We wish to congratulate UTSA on their inaugural year success and look forward to helping the program grow in the future.”

UTSA will host six games this fall beginning with Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday. Northwestern Oklahoma State (Sept. 22), San Jose State (Oct. 20), Utah State (Oct. 27), McNeese State (Nov. 10) and Texas State (Nov. 24) also will come to the Alamo City this season.

"The City Council on Thursday approved a deal for the UTSA Roadrunners to play football at the Alamodome through 2035.

After the move passed unanimously, UTSA athletic director Lynn Hickey said ”it’s just a great advantage” to have a home locked in for the next 24 seasons.

She praised city staffer Mike Sawaya for his efforts in hammering out the deal, which amends what had been an agreement through 2017.

“It’s been fun to work with people that have a vision and want to do things that help the city academically and economically,” Hickey said. “So it’s a fun partnership.

“There are three teams in Texas that play in a dome — the (Dallas) Cowboys, the (Houston) Texans and UTSA. So, how cool is that?”

The original agreement started last year in UTSA’s first season. It ran for five years through 2015, with the option to extend for two additional seasons.

The new deal is effective immediately and gives UTSA additional revenue opportunities from suites and parking."
