"SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will have several special recognitions during its 2012 home opener against Texas A&M-Commerce, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Alamodome.
As part of First Responders Day, UTSA will recognize the brave men and women who respond to emergency situations in and around San Antonio. Special sections have been set aside for the first responders, their families and friends.
San Antonio Police Officer Stanley Brown will receive a Purple Heart on behalf of his daughter, Officer Stephanie Brown, who was killed in the line of duty in March 2011. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus and San Antonio Deputy Fire Chief Carl Wedige also will join both teams’ captains and UTSA President Dr. Ricardo Romo for the ceremonial coin toss just prior to kickoff. Officer Brown will toss the coin as a representative of the first responders and their families.
Meanwhile, UTSA will begin to honor six past conference championship teams, one at each of its six home games this season. The first squad to be recognized is the 2000 volleyball team, which posted a 24-9 overall record (17-3 SLC) under the direction of the late Katrinka Jo Crawford en route to the Southland Conference Tournament Championship and a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
Former UTSA track & field All-American Teddy Williams, a two-year member of the Dallas Cowboys, will sign autographs for fans in the north lobby of the Alamodome from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. He also will be recognized on the field as the school’s first-ever NFL player and for his numerous track & field accomplishments. A trio of UTSA men’s basketball players — seniors Kannon Burrage and Michael Hale III and Larry Wilkins — also will be signing autographs for fans in the north lobby during that time.
Tickets for the contest are on sale and can be purchased online at goUTSA.com or by calling (210) 458-UTSA (8872).
The Roadrunners enter this weekend's game at 1-0 after securing the program’s first-ever road and Football Bowl Subdivision victory in last Saturday's thrilling 33-31 come-from-behind trimuph at South Alabama."
