RE: NIU Football Preview - Daily Chronicle
we are riding a high wave...it's the holiday and bowl season...the future looks so brite I wear shades to bed...
why devote any time and energy to trash a former Huskie QB...he is no longer playing... good, average or otherwise - Phil H likely gave it his all ...move on dudes.
Celebrate the positives during this current ride and mimimize the negatives from the past. Enjoy the ride.

Who was the QB before Finlen? On the tip of my tongue but I can't remember.....
Edit - Aaron Gilbert.
Dear Aaron Gilbert. I'd like to apologize for all the things I said about you while I watched Huskie Football in 1994 and 1995. Those where T-U-F tough times and I am sure you gave it your all.
Sincerely, Lord Stanley

Lets get back to how bad Horvath was! I remember explaining to my two year old daughter why NIU lost the 2004 Iowa State game, and I basically said, "OK you're the receiver, catch!", and I threw a foam football ten yards away from her four consecutive times. Then she defiantly stuck her finger in her nose.
He made some good throws, but he just wasn't always the clutch guy who could win a game for you.
Now, back to the love...
Horvath wasn't as bad as some make him out to be. He was decent, like Haldi. Didn't do that well as a sophomore when he had to fill in for Haldi. Good year in 2005 though, when he still had Hurd to throw to. By 2006, Hurd was gone as was Powers. He had guys that dropped passes, like Davis and Perez.

LOL Aaron Gilbert, I had forgotten! Was he the starter until '96 then Finlen took over in '97? Trying to place that.

I do remember someone produced a half hour long season preview for the 2006 season that was broadcast on Comcast and they showed a lot of highlights from 2005, including a ton of completed passes. However, just about all but a couple of those passes were to Hurd in the highlight reel, and I recall thinking, boy the passing game might be tough this year. I think an offense that was 95% Wolfe to the left, Wolfe to the middle, Wolfe to the right had a little to do with it too.
I got no beef with the kid. God knows he's done more with his life than I have.

The Iowa State game pretty much summed up Horvath career at NIU... throw 4 picks, make a furious comeback playing unbeliveable football in the second half but come up short. What a roller coaster ride that game was...

Aaron Gilbert was a Juco transfer, so we only got two years from him. He was a nice guy. I p*ssed next to him at Molly's once and he was surprised that I recognized him (NIU football players were pretty under the radar once they stopped wearing those Jerry Pettibone-era white Converse high top turf shoes all over campus).
Horvath was the very definition of mediocre.
