RE: Schnellenberger says FAU will bypass CUSA and go Big East
Keep in mind that when he got the FAU job Schnellenberger said the Owls were too good for the Sun Belt, hewould have the Owls competing for a national championship and playing in an on campus dome stadium too.
He's the crazy drunk uncle at thanksgiving dinner, and everybody is too polite to ask him to leave.

This isn't Miami in the 80's, they're not gonna become a power with all of that competition down there. Seriously, how many teams can one area support? There's already three schools down there.

Incorrect.
FAU has a TV market.
.. that's owned by The U.

You're being generous by saying UM owns it, though granted their presence is huge.

Howard doesn't like CUSA. He left Louisville when they announced they were going to join. I was living in Louisville at the time and remember him saying that he would never have the opportunity to play for a national championship if they joined CUSA. In hindsight, he was right.
He really had Louisville moving in the right direction when he left. He's obviously delusional these days, but you can't argue with what he has accomplished in his career as a coach.

This was why I wasn't excited about adding either FIU or FAU. Saying "Florida" is a hotbed for recruiting and that's why you need a presence there is really misleading. Florida, after all, implies lines drawn on a map. The college athletics "Florida" is really I-4 north until the godforsaken lowlands of south Georgia and west all the way across the Redneck Riviera to include Mobile.
The whole point of being in a market is that when you visit your school will have its name in the papers and local news for a week so when you reach out to a recruit in that area, or even send materials to that potential Rhodes Scholar, you get past the "who the hell is this" barrier. That type of coverage just doesn't exist in south Florida for college sports.

How do you figure? They have the best football attendance in CUSA generally speaking (i.e., they may not have been #1 every year, but they'll be top 3 every season regardless of record), but the best market?

I'm not sure that I agree that he was right. He had Louisville in a great position to continue to improve recruiting and get better. He left that job and I don't think the he ever won another conference championship, much less compete for a national title. I think that he had a better shot at winning a title at Louisville than any of this other subsequent stops. But, we'll never know.
There are rumors that have followed him around and some in this thread have hinted at them. Hope he enjoys retirement and takes the time to play with the grandkids.

Everybody in Miami may be fans of The U but they all actually go to school at FIU.

thanks, I didn't know that. that's still a long, long way from competing for a national title, but I was obviously incorrect.

Because more than any other CUSA program they own their market. I said the best...not the biggest.

Um, ok...that's a unique definition I guess. My grandmother still lives in a tiny town in north Alabama in the house where she grew up. She does own it, though, so I guess she has the best house in, um, the state? Her street? The best house in the area around her house that doesn't include any portions of neighbors' houses or that tree fort those damn kids built last summer? Not sure how this works entirely... Is there a minimum value threshold? Because I'm feeling I've got the best gotdamn socks in this room...of which there are precisely 2, and they're on my feet, but I own the hell out of them.

The "best" term was probably over the top, but Gold's underlying message is that there is a huge difference between "being in a market" and "owning the market"....and there's truth in that.

Oh I agree, but his initial description didn't have his later detail which is why everyone gave him the response they did. I just found blazr's response funny. ECU owns Greenville and a large contingent of people in Eastern NC. My brother is an ECU alum and I've seen it. Then again, all that changes in basketball season.
